lmsg2011 Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 My other half has been using Joli OS for about 7 - 8 months now and she loves it. She uses it mainly for surfing the net. It's installed on an Old HP laptop. She always hated waiting for things to load, with Joli OS you click on Chrome and it opens more or less instantly... brilliant. New version coming out soon too.
NikChillin Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 Tested it last night and works fine most of the time, couple of times the page timed out but that is due to my internet connection. It didn't really seem any faster than my other pc tbh. Might work better with a decent intenet connection.

You probably won't notice much difference between it and a decent PC in terms of speed, but it really comes in to its own when put on old/cheap hardware - can really breathe new life in to old kit!

Totally agree! I can see why so many companies/sites are encouraging it, but I don't like it one little bit.
Theblacksheep Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 I setup a proxy at home and noticed although no one in my house has an account or uses fb, the other sites visited through 'likes' (aka advertising endorsements) and other 'social' media plugins generated so much data that fb was the top site. Its overtaken flash as most the annoying useless bit of websites. In a way that parallels the way people used to think 'the internet' as the WWW, we are now seeing those late to the party or many of the generation of children currently in school define 'the internet' as the corporate advertising machines such as fb, google and youtube.

Does Linux see the tablet devices as just a generic input or does it require certain drivers to be added? I'll still try an install to find out. These things have tiny amounts of ram though. About 256 mb if I remember right.

Type "nickel-browser &" to load Chrome. 2. Click on the spanner to change the settings. In "Under the hood" you can click "change proxy settings" 3. put in the proxy details. 4. hit wide spead. 5. authenticate. 6. done.

Another way to access the browser is to right click on the network icon at the top of the home screen > About > click on the link and it opens Chrome! Put your proxy settings in as per busby's steps 2-6!

It's a lightweight OS so it should run on an Etch-a-sketch. Bear in mind its limitations, esp with local files and such, but it's a neat way of recycling old kit into web clients. Most of my stuff is in the cloud, Just want a laptop web based to stick at home for quick web surfing. If i want to do any work then I use my computer.
