I installed it on my Dad's rather old Dell Mini 10 and it runs like a high performance workstation. It's been running a while, no support calls and no lost files. He's has happy as a sandbag. It's heavily tailored to the cloud, mind you, so if the thought of all your stuff living 'out there' scares you, it might not be for you. That said, you have to ask which is more likely - Google having a total systems failure, or your hard disk going wrong. Hmmmm. I've tried a raft of distros for basic netbooks, and this screams along. It's based on Ubuntu with a Chrome/HTML5 front-end. It also comes with all the codecs necessary for the web - I didn't need to install anything else. One thing - you'll need to search for and install a print package to print. Just go to apps and search for 'print'. TBH this really should have been included in the install, but hey ho, I'll forgive them.
localzuk Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 We've got 60+ eeePCs that are semi-useless at the moment, so along with Ubuntu I will take a look at this! We already use Google Apps and Moodle (which has their shared drives in place), just need to look at some form of web based printing system now - which might come along if/when we move to a managed print solution with PaperCut.

Crushing blow. *Surely* there must be a way? This article says it's popular with some European schools, which I imagine would use a proxy of some sort. featured_spectre Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 Installs nicely...once you have the proxy written in the console, you can create a file for it and bang it out en masse through USB (I would presume). I am looking at creating a Batch/VBS type script to see if it will work

localzuk Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 Right, got it running on this eeepc 701, via our guest wireless which has transparent proxying. Don't know why the wireless didn't work on my first install. Now it is asking me to sign up to Jolicloud. So, basically, it isn't really suited to school owned equipment use - it is aimed at individuals - it even offers to link to facebook, which is obviously a no-go.

But for individual use, I still maintain that it registers about 40 Megafonzies on the coolness scale. A cloudy, but less Facebooky, web centric lightweight OS (what a mouthful) might be PeppermintOS Peppermint OS
