What do you use for internal messaging, I've been asked to look into it I think we are looking for a messaging service (cheap as poss) that teachers can communicate with each other, although if the teacher's laptop is attached to the smartboard they won't want the message to pop up for the whole class to read!

There are problems with both a jabber based system and with email.

With email you have the problem that staff never check it,

With jabber it could pop up in front of their smartboard software - but this can be controlled by educating them to use the 'away' status in a decent jabber client which suppresses popups when it is set.

People seemed to settle on Wildfire as being best server software.

Along with PSI on the clients (The Spark client on the Jivesoftware site is written in Java and uh...slow).

Thanks for the prompt replies, apologies for not checking previous posts - I'm 'interneted out' after trying to upload our school choir movie to the BBC's Joseph site - me and millions bringing the bbc server to a grinding halt!

Cheers.

Going off topic a bit.

Chrbb How long did it take for your movie to become active? After 2 days of atempting to get the thing on the bbc site it has yet to appear!!

It took ages to get to the uploading page, 3 attempts to upload despite *wmv being accepted files I finally got it accept *mpeg.

And after all that no it's not appeared yet! The site seems to be getting slower and slower obviously they didn't anticipate so much interest.

We have setup wildfire but not really told anyone about it. What is everyones opinion on giving staff access to IM systems? I am trying to put together a argument to staff on why this will be helpful etc.

It's part of that 'Joseph search for a star we can't think what else to put on for our licence fee payers on a Sat night' program.

We want to use it for call outs. Saving the teachers from leaving a class unnatended to get to the one phone per department.

Our use would be for urgent messages from staff to admin, so setting the client to not pop up would be fine. I'd want the clients to auto log on as the teacher logs in.

Looking into MS Office Live Communication Server, as it ties in nicely with Vista, Office 2007, Exchange 2007 and Sharepoint 2007

I've just been testing openfire on a windows server using ldap and psi as the client and I could not get psi to log me on.

Install spark and it worked perfectly first time.

Tried everything it could have just been a funked up psi install.

With spark bnorcutt@server worked where server is the name of the openfire server.
