sqdge Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 Last Friday I was involved in an accident on the M25 that wrote off my car (I'm fine, thanks for asking). It was a strangely enjoyable experience, but in hindsight I am confused about the priorities I gave certain things. For example, as soon as the car had collided into me, I thought the most important thing in the world was to switch on my hazard lights before I even bothered to put any form of brakes on! However, the really weird thing was the items in my car that I considered important enough to "rescue": some scripts, a Toyota Yaris mug (yes, they really exist - and I drove a Seat Ibiza), and my broken iPod. Which made me think of this week's Pointless Question of the Week: Assuming you have all your personal belongings with you in your car (excluding family and friends), what would be the first thing you would rescue in the event of an accident?

I drive a motorbike. :sign6: I have to make a correction though - I got a puncture this morning, so will be using my large box thing with wheels on in the morning to get to work early to fix the bike. So if I have an accident, the first thing I'll rescue will be my tyre levers I should have had on me this morning.....

I would probably grab my bag which contains laptop, PDA and Creative Zen Portable Media Center. My phone sits in my pocket At least I could watch a film or listen to some music while waiting for police/ambulance/recovery to show
contink Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 Strange you should come up with this topic... I was in a flat in Montreal one Xmas eve when someone decided to fire bomb the entire building. I woke up to a window full of flames, got up, grabbed a few clothes and then phoned the fire brigade.. .. yep, while the building is pretty much getting ready to do a full on inferno around me. Needless to say the operator was like "Get out the building!" What I grabbed? my passport and a stuffed toy my sister had given me for my birthday the year before. Oh and I totally forgot to put on underwear so I'm out in -40 degrees with a jean zipper an inch from giving me frostbite that i won't ever forget. :?

It's kind of regular in that I find by Tuesday night / Wednesday morning I am quite bored. Also, what's better than getting to know fellow edugeekers a little bit better? I forgot to mention that I also rescued my SatNav, which was kindly telling me that there was a delay in the traffic due to an accident situated right about where my car was now!

enjay Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 I very rarely have anything in my car which would be worth recovering - cars can be stolen so I don't keep anything irreplaceable in there. If the fire were at home, I would want to take my laptop as that has all my photos on it. Afterwards, I would also wish that I'd grabbed some cherished teddy bears, although I suspect that in the heat of the moment (if you'll excuse the pun) I would probably forget them :-(

tobyhacker Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 This actually happened to one of our PE staff in Easter, the first thing he grabbed was his school laptop and phone (he thought the car might catch on fire). He placed the laptop next to a friends car who had stopped to help and walked away to talk to the police (in fairness to him he was in shock). When another policeman turned up he asked the friend to move his car which he did without question... can you see where this is going?! The family saloon car then reversed over the laptop... well, the front wheel did anyway! All in all if you are grabbing stuff don't place it NEXT to another car after an accident! But, one new screen later and the laptop is working fine... good old Dell Latitudes! Toby
Domino Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 Definately my guitar, which basically lives in the car due to the amount of travelling i've been doing lately. Also my fire staff, but that'd probably be the cause of any fires....
_Bat_ Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 Nothing worth keeping in our cars. A few music CDs, a packet of chewing gum/mints and not much else. I think it is best that way.
