I'm getting duffed up by our Maths department because they want access for the students to:

Maths Games - from Mangahigh.com

The word manga set the alarm bells ringing a bit but I've looked over the site and can't see anything of concern only 'educational' maths games....

Is anyone else using this site / allowing it?

Yup we have it at our place, one of a very large number of "educational"maths sites, issue is a lot of other subjects are fed up of them as they book an IT Room for say English work and find kids playing games, complain to us when we search the internet logs to see what said child has been doing its usually one of these maths sites that we have allowed and made to work for maths.

Not an easy one to solve in terms of keeping other subjects happy but certainly our maths dept use it and I've seen plenty of kids on it and it in the top 10 on the smoothie list!

Manga High has been around for a bit now and I have seen them exhibiting at BETT, so they are an educational resource, it's just they have found a way of doing it the kids would relate to and find attractive.

In fact, they are there again in January(stand H56 - Blue Duck Education), so good luck to them :)

Not surprised. Given I've caught our English dept using the manga version of Macbeth in handouts.

Which begs the question, if you want to appeal to the kids why not let them read something current instead of plastering Japanese drawings over literary classics?

***sorry for going off topic!***

Generally depends if it's an exam text or not and which board has the best compromise with regard to exam texts. Contemporary authors are covered (the project work splattering the walls in English are testament to that) but for public exams the choice is more limited.

Perhaps it would be better if it was set in medieval Japan?

A transposition of Shakespeare's 'Macbeth' to medieval Japan. After a great military victory, Lords Washizu and Miki are lost in the dense Cobweb Forest, where they meet a mysterious old woman who predicts great things for Washizu and even greater things for Miki's descendants. Once out of the forest, Washizu and Miki are immediately promoted by the Emperor. Washizu, encouraged by his ambitious wife, plots to make even more of the prophecy come true, even if it means killing the Emperor...

Throne of Blood A very good film.

Can I just point out that most of us are not qualified to tell a teacher that a site isn't good enough for teaching/learning. Games are not just something to raise our noses at, regardless of whether we think they're useless or not. They can and do have a very good use in classrooms.

Indeed my "rant" wasn't about the lack of education value (as I am not suitable qualified to make that judgement) just the issue we now face with these sites are becoming an issue in other lessons due to them being games, fine maths games so have some value but not in an English lesson for example.
