6Foot2 Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 (edited) My Citroen Berlingo is off the road at the moment. It stops without warning and the garage cannot find the fault. The garage have since 'found' the fault and 'repaired' the car [at a cost of £ 78] Second day out of the garage and the car has broken down again. rhyds Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Modern cars are too complex :S This is a double-edged sward, it is true that new cars have a lot more electronics in than older ones (my old metros only had electronic ignition) but there's a dedicated band of enthusiast for almost every car who find ways around the electronic pitfalls, as is witnessed by the explosion in DIY engine management kits and also home interface kits for systems such as VAG-COM (The VW group control system) these allow for home diagnosis and many exploits and mods to be applied. Also modern EFI systems give more power while also giving better economy than old carb and dizzy systems.

A few taps with a mallet did...

I've got the exploded PDF, operations guide and logical process flowchart showing all the data inputs for my little CFi engine's management. Tis a doddle.. Nothing more than circuit boards, switches and sensors, and a base map of parameters for operating them in sequence. Now, SU carburettors...heh..well...

Funny you mention this as I have recently been hearing about more and more car enthusiasts getting either diag kits or just the software to hook laptops up as they have got cheaper and say it is really easy to fix a lot of things now. Diagnostic systems on most cars are great so can tell you exactly what is wrong. Ok beyond that it may get technical to fix but someone was telling me he had a problem, hooked the kit he borrowed of a friend up and it immeadiately told him that a certain fuse was gone & a few other things that needed looking at. No long diag process just the tech telling him what was needed.
