OSX server - Home folders and network drives

I've got our macs mapping the users windows network home folder by making sure that in AD users and computers it doesn't use a DFS path. All is good and working and it appears in the dock.

 

Only problem is the users mac home folder (ie the one which appears in the sidebar, and the one the kids and staff will assume is the one to use) is still just on their local machines.

 

 

Hope that makes sense! Anyone know if it is possible to move this location to a folder within their network home? ie

is force local home directory ticked?

 

System preferences -> Users and Groups -> Login Options -> Join. Click on "open directory utility", click AD and click the pencil. Click the arrow next to Show Advanced Options and check whether it is ticked in there. If it is then untick it and click OK!

 

That should do the trick!

Just to let you know I have had this problem and still do unfortunately. Say you're using MSOffice 2011 for mac and you go to File > Save as per usual. You save to what you'd think would be your network drive as it would appear as 'bloggsj' with a house icon next to it, but it's actually to local profile that you'd be saving to. Has confused our users no end and caused me a bit of grief! It's something to do with the sidebar preferences which neither myself or anyone else here have come up with a solution for at the mo. What i've done though is just created them an 'idiots guide' (if you will ) on how to save work to either the desktop and drag it from there, or drag the network drive into the sidebar and then it appears in File > Save. Those changes aren't saved on log off though.. that'd be too simple!

is there any reason you couldn't turn force home profile off though? then there is only the network locations that can be saved to, but you do still have to drag them to the sidebar if you want to view them there, a real pain if you ask me, and because we use iMovie, i have to leave forece home profile on.

 

As SC92 says, its a matter for explaining, and training.

 

Come on apple give us a proper solution!!!

iMovie, Garageband and the native mac apps don't like saving to network drives. I've seen the technical term somewhere but that's the main reason.

I have no idea why, its just what everyone i know you has a mac network has told me, so never attempted to try at doing it over the network, i guess iMovie, likes to move and play with a lot of massive files, storing hours of footage, would be a huge drain on the network to get 30 users actively using iMovie over the network.

iMovie will work over a network, but it is good practice to us it locally (large files / rendering etc). iPhoto likes HFS+ formatted (ie Mac) volumes for it's library. Our home folder servers are all Mac OS based so all our Macs and PCs are happy.
