  1. Hi all, I'm trying to map a windows share using SMB (via profile manager) on student login for our macs (running 10.10) and also an AFP share for a drive that resides on our mac server. Upon student login to the client machines, the username/password prompt appears for every drive mapping ive specified. Is there anything I can do to auto authenticate to the drives using the current students login? Vaguely remember something along the lines of adding '/user%' to the end of the drive mapping, but unsure if this is correct or not. They login with AD credentials to the clients. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    PCIe 3.0.. worth it?

Thanks for that - pretty much my thoughts, but it never hurts to seek a few more opinions Plus the price of intel stuff is very offputting..

    PCIe 3.0.. worth it?

Hoping to play highest, if not, high end of the latest games coming out now/next few months. Going to buy an SSD and maybe even a HD monitor, hopefully it will be a big performance increase from what i'm using now!
  4. Hi all. Basically looking at upgrading my pc to something that's looking to play the newest games at high detail for the next few years or so. I've been looking at these so far; Graphics - XFX 7870 Core Edition DD AMD/ATI Graphics Card - 2GB - FX-787A-CDFC - Scan.co.uk MB - Asus M5A97 Evo R2.0 AMD 970 AM3+ Motherboard - Scan.co.uk CPU - AMD FX 8350 Black Edition 8 Core Processor 4.00GHz Piledriver Socket AM3+ - FD8350FRHKBOX - Scan.co.uk Now from what I've read, those should all play along very nicely together and will have a fairly decent performance too, correct me if I am wrong, it's possible My question is.. the MB i've picked at the mo only supports PCIe 2.0. Again from what i've read, there isn't that much of a difference performance-wise between PCIe 2.0 and PCIe 3.0, but we all know what information on the internet can be like. Is what i've read correct about PCIe 2.0/PCIe3.0, or complete rubbish meaning i'll have to re-think and probably go intel?! Cheers!
  5. We're using primarily iPad 2's and have had issues on any version of iOS!
  6. Pretty much that ^ is all you need to do with mobile accounts/home sync set up. You can find the settings in WGM fairly easily. Everytime a user saves something to their then desktop on mac01, or drags their AD share into the sidebar on mac01, this syncs on login/logout and will be apparent on each mac they log in to thereafter.
  7. Where's the folder stored? Perhaps try to delete the folder above it, got to be worth a pop?
  8. Have had EXACTLY the same issue with only some machines here, all of the recommended things on the airserver site installed, as you also mentioned. Only seems to be when a user has recorded a video with the camera on their iPad, anything else mirrors perfectly fine.. Very very frustrating, i'm stumped!
  9. Do you use mobile accounts? I previously had this problem at a previous school but new school/mac setup with mobile accounts/home sync, and I have found a way around it. When each user logs in, get them to open up their AD share, and at the very top of the window where there's a little drive icon, drag that into the sidebar. Ok granted it's a bit of a pain to begin with but because of the mobile account/home sync setup, the user will only have to do this once and they can then select their AD share from the 'Save-as' drop down in applications. Works a treat here!
  10. Yes that's the right place - what I did was order them by date modified (newest at the top), open up a system prefs window next to that, change the mouse settings, then change them back to the settings you want, and the .plist you need will be the latest modified one. Then just copy it/export into WGM computer/user list and they'll be applied.
  11. If you use WGM to deploy settings, just set the mouse as you want it on a client, download/login to WGM on the client, find the .plist file (as above) then go back into WGM, click on the relevant computer/user group (depends where the .plist file is found, if it's in a user folder apply this setting to users, system folder apply it to the computer group etc) and then click on preferences, then the details tab, and drag it into there.
  12. Slightly off topic but.. I originally started using Meraki until I found that out - I am now using something called Lightspeed MDM. Has all the same functionality as Meraki (unfortunately not free, though) but allows you to create tiers and tiers of departmental, class, school etc devices. How i've done it so far is create a group on Lightspeed for each department, then arrange each device into the correct departmental group, buy the app via VPP and send it out at departmental level. Chances are if Maths teacher #1 has a paid app, Maths teacher #2 is going to want it too anyway! Works a treat here.
  13. Hi all, The music department here are looking at purchasing Mainstage, mainly because Garageband doesn't come with all of the instrument loops by default, and from what i've read purchasing Mainstage seems to be the easiest way to get hold of all of them. Now the music dpt only have 14 macs, and my question is if they go ahead and purchase it, how many copies do they need to buy? I can't find much documentation on this at all. I'm going to create a new image and roll this out via Deploystudio. I have read somewhere that if using an Apple ID, which we are, a purchase can be installed on up to 5 clients, but i've also read somewhere else that it can be up to 10 clients. This is the first piece of mac-only software that we're going to buy, so i'd be very grateful if anybody could point me in the right direction please!

    Bootcamp partition size

25 was bad enough! I WILL remember this for future reference to save myself the pain of it all over again. Thanks!

    Bootcamp partition size

Yes I did. Sounds like something I would miss having not imaged them in a fair while. Sending one through to DS now so i'll see if that fixes it! Thanks in advance if it does, though! EDIT: Yes, it works. Remarkable how something so simple can almost cause disaster. Thanks very much!
  17. Hi all, Just going through the last few things with our bootcamp re-install on our macs over this last week, and something potentially very frustrating has come up. When initially creating the bootcamp partition I had set it to a 200gb allocation. More than needed but you never know. I've install win7pro, then smartcliented (we're on a cc4 network) to build the machine, and Windows is only recognising 15-16gb. I've installed all the latest bootcamp updates to no effect. It even does this as a standalone win7 machine having gone back and actually checked. Have I done anything wrong or is this something that's known about? I'm more than certain a 16gb partition just isn't going to cut it when the new term starts next week! EDIT: Having gone back and checked the partition size in OSx, still states that it's 200gb as was allocated previously. what's going on!
  18. What the. Please tell me that is a joke?!
  19. We've had problems with this here before too. Just looking in my WGM app allow list and I have 'Alerts Daemon' listed in there, not sure if it's the same thing but worth a check! To find whatever is being blocked you'll need to open said application in Finder & go through the individual files & folders to find the specific file being blocked.. took me a while!
  20. Hi all, Has anyone been able to install SL Server onto an iMac before? I am currently trying to do so, so that I can practise the upgrade to Lion without actually just jumping right into it in the summer and potentially nerfing everything up. But unfortunately, upon trying to install it I am told that i'm unable to install max osx server onto this computer. No other details indicated.. except the install disc which specifically says 'Mac Mini' osx server install disc. It is looking like this disc is purely for installing osx server onto a mac mini.. but surely, just surely, I must be able to install this onto other Apple hardware?! I am not hopeful - but anyone that has an input on this your views are very, very much appreciated. EDIT: Also eventually, I'm looking into the question of virtualising osx server, is this possible? Do I need Apple hardware to run it on? Would it be possible with VSphere etc?
  21. "The dreams of my childhood have now been realised. When I wrap my naked body in this lush, extravagant foil I feel transformed, and I wander the streets, mostly at night, fighting crime. While my official position as a member of the police has been revoked as a direct result of these actions, my current life as a robot vigilante is far more rewarding. Dreams really can come true." "I bought 10 rolls of this stuff, took all my clothes off and wrapped myself in it just so I could experience what it was like being a left-over chicken drumstick. I even sleep in the fridge every night just to add to the thrill and excitement." What the..

    Hardware issue?!

I think I have now sorted this. Resetting the PRAM then allowed me to boot into safe mode, which then after a few restarts I was able to get into Lions recovery hd. Although the drive came back from disk utility as unrepairable, I then tried to erase the partition but couldn't do that either so I have just ended up formatting the whole drive instead of that 1 partition. It is now rebuilding with Deploystudio so fingers crossed it all comes together. Thanks for all the help!

    Hardware issue?!

Extended hardware test came back with no problems. Let the head scratching commence once again.
  24. Best part is I was actually reading that to the sound of the characters voices, burst out laughing at the end because of it.

    Hardware issue?!

Successfully got into the hardware tester, but the quick scan showed that everything was working as expected. Didn't quite believe that so I have set the advanced hardware scan running and I shall check back on it in the morning. Part of me is hoping that it picks something up, so then I can easily replace said faulty part. I am going to be completely stumped if this one comes back clean too!
