  1. Not very suitable for work, but having watched this on tv last night I couldn't help but share it here. First time i've watched The I.T Crowd since starting as an IT Tech, and when that certain sound effect comes on when moss restarts at 49-52 seconds, I was crying with laughter. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cdurgq7Fw4k
  2. We use, you guessed it, VNC.
  3. If you go to the C: drive of a station, and (depending on OS) navigate to the Users folder or Documents & Settings on Windows 7, and then all you have to do is filter it into date order accordingly. Shows the date/time logged out of stations for us. Not sure if this is the kind of solution you had in mind but it's a start at least hopefully.
  4. We've had problems installing Adobe programs/suite before when Flash is already installed. No idea why, remove Flash before hand and bingo, worked for us! We also get the same with Macromedia Studio.

    Imaging Bootcamp

That's pretty cheeky on Apple's behalf, especially seeing as so many schools still run XP and plan to for a few more years. You're probably best waiting til summer when you can get a mac server installed too imo. From my experience with them (only 2 years managing a mac/bootcamp environment, so don't take me TOO seriously ) it can be a pain to get things set up because it's so much different but once it is, requires little to no management at all.

    Imaging Bootcamp

This could be interesting.. We just had another 8 iMacs shipped with Lion, which presumably yours will be too, which only gave us the option to install Windows 7 on a bootcamp partition. Not sure if there is a way around that though, but I suppose you will find out soon enough! Back on topic we use Deploystudio, but you'd ideally need a mac server for it to be most effective. Gives us a pm if you need to.
  7. For heavens sake! ..
  8. What's Morgan Freeman doing in that picture?!
  9. Do you just need to control/observe other macs remotely? If so, you could always use ScreenSharing.app that's installed by default on osx. If you need to install remote apps/run remote commands then ARD is the way forward. We have an unlimited license for it and it's truly great, puts shame to RDP if you don't mind me saying!
  10. I had problems last night at about 6ish, something to do with EA I think don't worry.
  11. Technical term there But likewise, did the same for us!
  12. Can confirm the 10.7.3 patch is working on .local domains. WGM can't see the clients and Im unable to add them to any groups, but oddly, the preferences set in WGM are still active on the Lion clients. Not complaining for now, it seems to be working!
  13. We get this all the time. Most likely cause is a wrong/corrupt network driver. Whenever this happens we just create a USB build stick and build it that way.
  14. How are you installing win7? Is it deployed via the network? This happened to me, and I didn't know what the problem was and was ready to give up but then decided to re-format one last time and realised that I had been selecting the US keyboard layout when first installing windows from disc, so I just re-created the image from scratch, selecting the UK keyboard layout, and it sorted itself out.

    Server HDD Space

Our DS masters are stored on a different partition, I did first think this could be the problem but apparently not. That would be too easy, after all! After downloading a file browser it's told me that 380gb of files are hidden.. and it looks correct - I can't manually browse to the folder where our software updates are stored for example, but if I open it through the file browser, it opens for me. Strange

    Server HDD Space

As far as I know, it does have user storage. But our imacs are currently off the domain and in our office for rebuilding at the moment, so there shouldn't be anything coming through from the clients.

    Server HDD Space

Hi all, Got a really odd one here.. I've been watching one of our two partitions on our mac mini server closely for the past few days, and suddenly it has decided that an odd 140gb of space has just 'disappeared'. By disappeared, I mean it looks like it's been used up but for the life of me can't find what is using it. We're running 10.6.8 server but a mixture of 10.6 and 10.7 clients at the moment. I also downloaded Disk inventory to see if that could find where the space has gone but to no avail. Has anyone had this before?! Any advice/suggestions very much appreciated here - i'm stumped! EDIT: This seems to be completely random, I setup email notifications if low disk space ever were to occur and i've just checked them again now. Wednesday 1st Feb - 151gb free Thursday 2nd Feb - 183gb free - Not deleted anything afaik -how the !? Friday 3rd Feb - 61gb free Monday 6th Feb (Today) - 40gb free
  18. Hi all, I have a gut feeling that I may be asking a few questions in this section in the very near future, so bare with me! Yes, I did just ask that question! Due to unforseen circumstances, I just need a little guidance and want to know realistically if it can be done successfully or not. Here's the tricky part though - if this goes ahead we will have 17 Snow Leopard clients and 8 Lion clients for the short term, until we have time to fully upgrade to Lion Server, or at least purchase the remaining Lion licenses to upgrade Snow Leopard. I'm at the stage of uploading the Lion image to our DS Server, so the next thing i'm going to try and do is set up some managed prefs for Lion. However, I presume I will have to download the 10.7 admin tools and delete the existing 10.6 WGM settings, Server admin etc? Will 10.7 server admin tools pick up Lion and Snow Leopard clients? Or do I just continue to manage the Lion clients from our existing (fully functional) 10.6 server admin tools, and just ignore the new features that Lion comes with? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Yeah it's possible! What i've done is install a fresh Windows 7 build onto a bootcamp partition, update it to the latest bootcamp software/drivers, and imaged it with deploystudio. That way, in the future you can then just create the bootcamp partition and then it's smartclient ready! Hope that helps.
  20. Thanks for the replies guys. We're only running version 9.0.4 of iLife (iMovie, iWeb, iPhoto, Garageband etc) on our new 8 Lion clients, but on our other 17 Snow Leopard clients we're running 8.0.6, so to my mind, we would only need 17 licenses for iLife 9, which is installed on the new Lion clients, or is my logic completely flawed here?!
  21. Hi all, First of all apologies - I have created another thread in the licensing section but need a bit of an urgent response - mods please close the thread in the licensing section if you could! We are currently looking at upgrading from snow leopard to osx lion, but have been told that we will need to purchase new ilife licenses?! - I'm not sure whether this is the case or not and just need a bit of advice really. We are running 17 snow leopard clients, and due to unforseen circumstances, having 8 macs stolen, we were shipped the replacement 8 with Lion installed - hence why we are upgrading. Does anybody here know how Apple 'do' licensing for different OS's? Surely if we already have the 17 snow leopard clients licensed then why do we need to RE-LICENSE them on upgrading to Lion? Or is this how Apple work? I just can't get my head around it at the moment! Any advice/thoughts greatly appreciated. EDIT: Currently running 8.0.6 on our Snow Leopard clients and 9.0.4 on our Lion ones. Thanks!

  23. Could also be the lamp on its way out?! We've had yellow tints before, stick a new lamp in there and voila. Wouldn't recommend buying a new lamp until you're sure it's the problem though.
