Trying to install FMS and I am getting an error when I run setup.exe from the disc.

"Runtime Error 216 at 0000897E"

Tried running FMSSetup but that does not work either.

Has anyone else seen this problem?

This is the client setup. I has something to do with the 2 particular machines, as the install works on other machines. The 2 machines were software rebuilt at the same time, not too long ago. Im trying to track down what software is missing or problematic that is stopping the install.

I am trying to do a FMS install on a clean machine. Could anyone give me a pointer as it is quite a few years since I did a fresh install of FMS onto a workstation. I don't have a 6.8 CD either!!!!

Any help much appreciated

@ctbjs: The impression I got was to install 6.77 (or whatever the last version was) and use the CD that they supplied us woth. Nothing SOLUS-related.

I've seen errors like that with FMS.

I've not been able to install FMS properly for ages, Capita weren't much use when the problem first cropped up.

Now, when I need to install again, I run the latest FMS install (6.77 I think), for registry changes shortcuts etc, and then copy a working version from another machine over the top of it.

Reboot, and Bob's a monkey!

The documentation we got from the westfield centre says that to install FMS on a clean machine, as opposed to an upgrade, you have to have 6.79 installed and then upgrade to 6.8 (which then gets upgraded a few times to 6.83).

So, to install FMS you install the 6.77 (or 6.78) from CD, then use the 6.83 cd to upgrade.

Typical of SIMS.net - the whole thing is a dogs dinner, which they should have just built from scratch, instead of gradually upgrading sims!!!!!

IIRC if you install FMS from a version that's different than is on other machines you have to copy the FMS setup files from the server to a different location because the CD will overwite them with the earlier versions. Copy them back after the installation and it will pick up the fact that it needs to upgrade.

Hang on I'll check the support site.

See KB35095 for more details

"If a network installation of FMS is installed at a lower version that is currently running, it will overwrite the files in the setups folder. To avoid the need to run SOLUS 2 again, please follow all points below

1. Go to the setups folder in S:\SIMS\Setups.

2. Right click on FMSApplicationSetup.exe, go to Properties, and check the versions tab.

6.78 - 1.510.3.0

6.79 - 1.518.2.0

6.80 - 1.529.3.0

6.81 - 1.538.7.0

6.82 - 1.546.13.0

6.83 - 1.550.1.0

2. Copy FMSApplicationsetup.exe and FMSApplciationsetup.exe.signature

3. Paste these files on to the desktop.

For reinstalling FMS, delete the C:\IDAPI and C:\SQLANY50 folders before following the below steps.

3.1. insert CD

3.2. select FMS modules/install upgrade

3.3. select first 4 ticks for FMS modules (do not select upgrade database)

3.4. click next

3.5. click network install

3.6. click next on warning message screen

3.7. select workstation and sims applications check boxes and click next

3.8. select a location for the local program files for FMS e.g C:\SIMS\FMS and click next

3.9. select tcp/ip as protocol: this should be enough for most networks (if not, select all) and click next

3.10. sybase support files should default to c:\sqlany50, accept default and click next

3.11. the sims sql database file location should be the location of the sims.db and sims.log on the FMS server AS THE SERVER KNOWS IT: this may not be a drive on the machine you are on : fill in the details and click next

3.12. click next for default program folder ie Sims applications

3.13. you will then be presented with a summary of choices made click next

FMS will now install.

4. Copy the two files that have been pasted onto the desktop back into the setups folder. Say Yes to overwrite files.

5. Run FMS through the start menu, and the upgrade will commence.

Please ensure the odbcad32 information (you can launch this by running odbcad32 at start | run is correct for the FMS server."

Thanks HeeBeeJeeBee although this doesn't help me much as I have a 6.77 CD and nothing else!!

Capita nicely forwarded me a 6.8 version but I cannot do an install direct from that.

I have noticed however that we no longer need to copy out the FMSApplicationSetup.exe file as it will now only be overwritten by a later version. (Source: FMS 6.80 release notes) I would assume however that this will apply from 6.80 onwards!!!

I'll have to see if I can get hold of a fresh copy of 6.78 I think.

thanks anyway though and I will retain your notes for future.

Sorry, I'd assumed it was an install on a new machine and that you were already using FMS. It wouln't have solved your original problem, it was just a word of warning about the overwriting of the installation files.

I think I need to clarify this more.

I am using FMS and currently on 6.80 (Server and two existing workstations) about to upgrade to 6.83 via solus.

I have a brand new workstation that doesn't have FMS on it at all. I only have a 6.77 CD which will not allow upgrade to 6.80. I need to have a 6.78 or 6.79 CD to install and then upgrade via the server.

I hope this is a little clearer now

thanks

sorry localzuk, have you tried to call them lately to get a quick answer, I called them last week prior to posting on here, I have had one call back to say they are sending a 6.80 CD out to allow me to install it, however the 6.80 CD is a base realease that can be upgraded from 6.78 and 6.79. Their helpdesk has gone right down the swanny of late.

I’m trying to do the same thing as Craig_W in that I have a clean machine and want to install FMS and Sims .net. I have the 6.78 install CD but I keep getting the error “There was a problem trying to execute the config32.exe”.

I can’t see where I’m going wrong.

I never got anywhere with this. It sat on the back burner for a while as the machines that I was putting it on didn't need it at that time, but they do now, so I need to figure this now too!

The original error message posted by craig is quite a common one from what I've seen, it's normally been down to the default printer on that machine not been available or offline, if they are using a network printer make sure it is turned on and available for the user/machine.

Hope this helps

I know this is an old post but THANKYOU!

That error was doing my head in, and sure enough the problem was a printer was being mapped that didnt exist anymore

But I would have never known to look there otherwise

Random question about FMS - want to know if its just our disc. When I install 6.78 from the Spring 2005 CD, it all goes OK until I try to start it and get an application error from FMSLOAD.exe when it tries to update. Only way I found to get round it was to copy FMSLOAD from another machine that had been updated. The new machine then updated fine

I have had similar problems with FMS and all I could do was do the install from CD (which failed to work after updating) Then copy all files in /program files/SIMS/FMS to the new machine from a known updated working machine. Not an ellegant fix, but it works.
