My Samsung home cinema DVD player just bit the dust (too costly to repair) so on the lookout for a new DVD player and recommendations. Not bothered abut the home cinema bits as room layout not suited to it and didnt use it much bit DVD player must have USB connection and ability to be able to play recorded videos from a memory stick. So many out there just dont know which to pick.

Seen this one SAMSUNG DVD-H1080R DVD Player - rose black | Dixons | as its similar to the one we had and seems to do most things, any other suggestions to look at?

Why not go upto a BluRay player? I did when my DVD became more hassle than it was worth? They offer so much more and they play your DVDs fine :)

PS 3 - dvd and blu ray playback as well as a games console :D

If you are after something that has surround sound etc then either a stand alone blu ray player or HTPC with a blu ray drive and relevant version of power dvd or something that can play blu ray - gets a bit more complicated with a HTPC because everything has to conform to certain standards so as to be able to playback the HD content.

Blu Ray is the way to go - you can pick up a cheap and chearful one for probably the cost of your old DVD player when new (Samsung D5500 3D Smart Blu Ray Player).

The other option if you are that way inclined would be to build your own HTPC - just get one of the new AMD Fusion ITX motherboards, put it in a case, add a HDD, RAM and drive (not to mention windows!) and you have a full on entertainment PC through Windows Media Centre.

I'd say go for a Sony Blu Ray player - picked up the BD-S380 during an offer at our local Argos for £89. Play.com - Buy Sony BDP- S380 Blu-ray Player online at Play.com and read reviews. Free delivery to UK and Europe! The beauty is that lots of them now have internet TV capabilities built in, and the Sony ones have an android app (and iphone too I believe) which you can control the device from.

The Samsung ones are interesting looking too, as they make use of the Samsung Apps tech - so you can add new functionality to it as you go.

have a look at what is available from your local lidl or aldi if you aren't that bothered by brand or homecinema performance. our local aldi had a tevion bluray unit with usb input and memory card reader for about £90 not so long ago.

I can also offer a biggup to the sony BDS-380. i've used a few of these in installations and they have proved very good.

There's one feature on that one that the one I got doesn't have which I wish I had - DLNA support. Definitely worth looking for one with it, then you can have something like a NAS device with DLNA support and not have to have it connected via USB (ie. so you can add files to it from your PC and not have to go fiddling around unplugging and plugging things in), or so you can stream from your PC direct to the player.

Yes, I use it to stream media from my NAS over the wireless which the 570 has built in
