Had a new Dell switch delivered yesterday and the initial configuration had to be done with RS232 cable and terminal!

To compound the weirdness the stacking of these switches is done with HDMI cables.

To see new and old tech together like that was a real WTF moment

I know a goodly number of good techies that know a serial cable is left in the switch, but no idea about what RS232 is ... they just connect this cable into a USB port and fire up the CLI ... that is if they are not just connecting over IP that is ... which many do ... or even the GUI.

 

Who would be surprised to get a blank look if they showed some vampire taps to people?

Would people be shocked to see a CAT3 patch lead?

 

What about drills? If you showed this to some people today they would think it was an archaic tool (seen it done at a local college to students partway thorough apprenticeships)

yet there are many carpenters and joiners happily using it.

Happily? Sheesh, those are just plain hard work. Why would you want to use one? A bit like trying to get two disparate bits of serial kit to talk to each other, or to a PC without a serial port. And no, they don't like the version of the USB-Serial device you've bought either!

i find them useful for odd jobs where i need more control less speed and i have just a few holes to drill

It looks as though (as already mentioned) this '98 box was used as a Print server, but it could also of been used as a cheap File server. Windows 98 isn't limited to 10 concurrent connections like Windows 2000 and later, which made it ideal.

 

These days though (even behind a firewall) it could be dangerous as Windows 98 hasn't been supported for such a long time!

I assumed that as you were undertaking that technical job, and later added that you upgraded the entire network recently too, that you were from a technical background! Might be something in it that for an Admin to investigate.

 

I don't get too hung up on rep, but it does bug me slightly when someone doesn't explain the reason / want discussion!

(Won't say any more on the subject as I know there are other current threads on rep in general!)

Ok to respond to that comment, the Rep thread was closed for good reason and the Admins are looking into the Rep system as its clearly got issues and some people maybe abusing the system.

 

If members have concerns over reps that have been issued please post in the Message the Admins forum -> http://www.edugeek.net/forums/message-admins/ and they will look into it as all rep is logged and the admins can view and amend that and will issue sanctions to members if required as well as remove ungrounded reps issued.

"Good reason".... Closing a thread, seemingly without contributors knowing the reason, doesn't smack of great communication. Even when responding here, a meaningful reason isn't given....

A community without communication...?
