Cleaning a projector yesterday in a primary school, blowing the dust off with a can of air next thing that appears is a large flame out the side of it. luckily it went out straight away, now I have been asked to see if I can get this projector repaired. hmmmmmmmmmmm.

 

Anyone got any Idea how to repair a burnt projector?

Yes, but it'll cost about £350 and will involve fitting a new case.

i did the same thing once. was in a rush to clean the filters and left the projector on, blew the canister of air into a filter and it must have shot out a jet out it as liquid as i heard a loud pop and then could smell my eyebrows burning

 

left a nice large hole in the filter but the projector itself was fine luckily

This is caused by the propellants (usually propane and butane) in the can of air burning in the projector. I'm guessing the projector was either switched on or had only just been turned off?

 

Is the projector actually showing any signs of damage? If not, it is unlikely it was damaged as the air/propane/butane burn so quickly there was unlikely to be any build up of heat enough to do any damage.

Really? I do this all the time with the projector left on!!

That's ace! I'm not tempted to try it though, but the propellant in air dusters is flammable (says here 13% by mass flammable content), and some projectors do get mega hot...

Thats one of the reasons why they state to leave them turned off for a preiod of time before changing the bulb to allow the high temperatures to drop.

 

I use a giottos rocket blower for all of my projector cleaning no chance of igniting propellants then.

Lets just say the teacher jumped, I jumped with a quick use of the word s***e forgetting there was 6 year old kids in the room, but then again the first thing that went through my head was how am I going to put this out where is the nearest extinguisher

you mean around teachers? especially if the work common was in front of it....!

 

but i've done it before and the kids (14/15 year olds) just laughed!

Believe me its not my common language, honestly it never comes out of my mouth so yes a little ashamed that I did say it. But at the point when there is a flame inches from my face....

Yeah, that's a ridiculous view to take. If someone injures themselves, it is 100% natural to exclaim, as is it when you're shocked. I rarely swear, but when I do it is usually related to a situation like this. (I didn't even swear when I put my hand through a window for example).

 

To try to say that someone swearing when they have flames shooting out of something which they are right next to/working on is a shameful thing to do is nonsense pure and simple!

Speaking from experience, sometimes it's the automatic response. Myself and NM were working on the old building, doing..oh, I forget what. Class full of quiet kids, then "BZZT!", we both got a hefty shock. It was a case of "BLOODY HELL!..erm..I mean "Ouch".."

 

I had a PSU go off gunshot style right by my ear one day..managed to catch that and turn it into a "FU...OOOOOOK! That..hurt. Ow."

 

When my junior tech got propelled across the gym by a live-earth short on a metal pedestal he was working on, he let rip a few choice words..some were aimed at me, as i picked up my radio and said "Body bag to the gym please, we've just killed him. Yes, you heard me. BANG, and he's flat on his back. Oh no, wait..I can see signs of life. Either that or he's having a fit..".

 

Ruddy electrocution virgins.. It was his last day to boot! Poor lad.
