I just want to punch them. A special kind of punch that will break the motherboard in half but not leave a mark on the laptop ;)

I wouldnt mind punching the wireless points too but to be fair to them I do not think it's their fault as my Iphone and Ipad connect fine within about 5 or 10 seconds every single time.

The laptops? Oh no. 6 months ago they all worked fine. This week I can boot them up 10 times and 7 times out of 10 they won't connect at all.

I've spend 50% of my working week fiddling with 10 laptops and 2 WAPs. What a total waste of time. The other 400 PC's that are plugged into the wall work fine day in day out for up to 6 years.

I hate wireless. I hate laptops.

There thats my rant over.

I feel better now.

I think the more appropriate action would be to Falcon Punch the people who suggest wireless and laptops like it will bring and whole meaning to IT...

When in reality the laptops never move from the desks they are placed on...

And they just moan because the wireless is slow... :D

Here's a story that might cheer you up a bit.

I used to live in a shared flat with a dude who used to get really, really drunk at the weekends. He had a farily nice laptop which he used for facebook and looking at porn. He wasn't the most computer litterate person in the world but he got by. One day it wouldn't connect to the wireless and then when it did it kept dropping the signal all the time so he punched the screen right in the middle. There was a kind of fist shaped lcd bleed in the middle of the screen which was pretty funny on it's own. The next weekend I came home from work and he asked me if I could 'see if I could fix his laptop'. In a drunken rage he had bent the laptop (he was quite a big lad) in half down the middle, the opposite way you would open it!! I managed to get the hard drive out and his photos off it but the rest was scrap.

I always think of bending them in half accross my knee and how releaving it would be.

We used to have HP APs here, would work fine for ages then...nothing. Turns out they needed a firmware update to get working again.

What wireless cards are in the laptops ? Maybe they need new drivers.

I am surrounded by 650+ laptops...... I want to pile them all in a heap & drive a road-roller over them, then borrow a JCB & bury the remains to improve drainage outside.......

I have around a dozen sitting staring at me now in need of TLC; some with keys pulled off, one suffering from being dropped approx 1m onto a concrete floor, another with a dead system board.

I am glad it's Friday.....

Butuz,

This may be common knowledge but it was news to me. It is apparently important which channels adjacent AP's use, something to do with how frequencies interact with each other....

Our wifi developer said if for example you have 3 APs, you MUST use channels 1,6,11 - this is to avoid noise generation caused by the different frequencies of the channels mixing and causing harmonics and additive peaks and troughs....

Not as amusing as some of the other posts - but maybe helpful....

I feel your pain as I am going through hell here too now...

13 old toshiba laptops with XP in the science dept - no problems

Replaced them with 16 shiny Samsung laptops with windows 7 - nothing but problems.

Updated drivers

Tweaked drivers

Bought a new N rated AP

Re-installed Windows

Turned off all security

running out of ideas now :(

I havent had too many issues until recently when a set of Toshes wouldnt work with anything..turns out they have 64 bit windows on and it has caused no end of issues. I had to flatten them and start again.

We are just about to buy some laptops - just when i had got rid of the last few....

We currently have 20 HP AP’s all managed by a controller. They work just great for the purpose they was installed for i.e. just for 50 staff laptops.

Management have purchased 95 laptops for students over the last year or so, each time I say we need to get more AP’s or you will have problems, do they listen not a chance.

Our new build will be fully wireless with just 3 fixed PC suites and 1500 laptops, I have told them and told them to rethink. It would only take a brief search on these forums to highlight the decision is wrong.

I keep a daily tally of repairs of laptops compared to fix PC’s. Today 5 laptops, zero PC’s

Barking mad the lot of them

Share your feelings about Laptops mate but Management just adore em! As to wireless I did share your feelings toward it but since persuading the Management that Ruckus via Net Ctrl and their superb support was the way it's been bliss - touch wood.

Its all about the drivers/firmware and WAPs. I just reinstalled 7x64 on a bunch of laptops and they work perfectly, even nicely run software deployment.

That perfect match is hard to find though, we have another batch that would not play nice with software deployment no matter what we did and those were newer.

This is why I still save a little bit of hate for wireless, managed or not its still just not as fast, reliable or robust as a good old fashioned network cable.

All our IT suites are wired. Every so often, I get a sales man saying that I should change it all over to wireless.

When I ask why, I get some really silly answers. but the cost alone would be silly. I already HAVE the wired. Why would I want to change that to wireless for rooms full of desktops?

We don't have laptops (count on one hand how many we have) and we don't have wireless!

what standard are the routers? what channel are you broadcasting on? nothing else near by on the same channel? How many ipads and ipods iphones etc are connecting to the wireless at any time. all factors to consider. Plus any devices will only run at the speed of the slowest device connected to the AP.
