Which disks for a QNAP for home?

I am looking at purchasing QNAP TS-410 for home for mass storage, backup and running VMs for my test lab. The only problem is I can't decide which HDs I need for them. Everyone I look at seems to have some sort of problem or another, whether it's the WD green disks head issues to the overheating samsungs.

I am looking to run 1 or 2 TB disks in a RAID 5 array so if anyone has a QNAP running and has not filled it with enterprise disks can you please tell me what you have and if they are okay.

WD RE4 1TB aren't horrendously epxensive.

The QNAp forum says:

'The WD Desktop drives (Green/Blue/Black) are not recommended for RAID volume usage'

But I am using two WD green drives in a QNAP TS 210 with no problems so far.

How much is the 4 bay version ( think its the same model as the one you are looking at ) ?

£286 on the net although I plan to get it a little cheaper than that if I can.

I got a QNAP-419P with 4 disks : Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000 HDS722020ALA330. Until now I got no hassle.

A vote against the WD Greens, I've just had a fire new 1TB one brick itself to the point where the PC wouldn't even POST. Reviews have never been particularly glowing for them either.

I have the 410 at home and over the years i have found all makes of hard drive to be as rubbish as the next. Disks fail so now i tend to let price be the major factor. I went for 4 x Samsung 2TB drives as they were around £54 each, i did have to update the firmware on them as they have 4K sectors but since then they have been running fine. I backup all the important stuff off the NAS onto Amazon S3 using the option in the NAS's CP.
