Anyway, I'm now a chuffed owner of an HTC phone. Can any of you "Androiders" recommend any apps that an Android owner should not be without?

I use mine as my personal assistant and my main app that I couldn't live without is Calendar Snooze so that when a diary appointment goes off, I can snooze it I use Touch Calendar to input calendar entries. And I use Tasker to automate operations. (e.g WI-Fi off, display unlock, full brightness,read any new SMSs out loud and launch a GPS app when I connect it to a car power lead) Other main apps Dropbox Seesmic to replace Facebook app as writing too small in Facebook one Skifta as DLNA Client/Controller Rockplayer to watch Xvids/Divx videos Barcode Scanner to scan QR codes Google Maps, Navigator and Sky Maps (and the new Google Docs but not used it much yet) Easy Installer (Lets you install non-market .apks direct from your SD Card) Swype (or similar) type keyboard replacment regards Simon

edutech4schools Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 If you get a Google account all the apps (email, docs, calendar, picasa, tasks, and lots more) can be linked to the phone. For example when I take a photo it gets uploaded to the cloud (picasa) as a backup. It will also backup settings and contacts, which can be viewed in Google docs online. The Google Chrome to phone gives you click and send to phone. You can highlight any text on your computer or a website and click send to phone and it get sent to the phone. Not really apps but handy.

Other than that I'll second taptu, and add TweetDeck and doubletwist as the media player: get the desktop client, and a cheap little upgrade and it'll sync media over wireless.

edutech4schools Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 If you use Winamp or MediaMonkey for you home music and want to sync the play counts / ratings download PlayerPro. DoubleTwist also syncs but you have to use their desktop software. With PlayerPro you do have to copy the database into Winamp and then back to your phone.

Android is hung off Linux, so there is not such a need for AV software.... However, I use the FREE http://www.mylookout.com I find that this does backups of contacts, pics and calls.

It being Linux based does not automatically mean it doesn't have any malware. There are and always will be rogue applications available for Android. Sure, they may not be 'viruses' as such, but they are still damaging and dangerous. Something like AVG will be able to spot them and report them to you.

Something like AVG will be able to spot them and report them to you. I think you'll find that I said "not SUCH a need", much in the same way that Mac users say it about Apple products. I put mylookout up because that it what I use, and in the last 9 months I've not had any problems. I can only speak from MY experience. As Android becomes more/the most popular OS for handheld devices, then I would expect to see an explosion of virus/spyware for them. But in the same way that people write viruses for Windows rather than Linux or iOS, they want to try to get onto the most popular format. The App market WILL have more and more fake programs come onto it....as can be seen from recent reports, but I would not advise anyone to try something that I haven't tried.
