Hey everyone, I just wanted to get some inside scope on how you handle your static IP management. Does everyone still rely on spreadsheets when assigning static IP address's? or do you use software for IP management.

I wouldn't mind handling a few but our entire network in static based, about 200 different ip address.. every once in a while we encounter an ip conflict because someone forgot to update the spreadsheet!

Spreadsheet here too. I have got 2 columns per IP range... ie... Left hand column is IP address and the right hand column is the device. Any Static addresses or exclusion ranges are in bold. It is a bit empty but is really useful to have.

All in my head and it works well :D oh and scraps of paper and notes in my planner and diary. It will eventually become part of "The Bible" when I check them all out, as we have 3 ranges for 3 systems so its all good fun :)

Any networks that i look after i do have to document it for records, but generally i have it all in my head because it works fine for me and i actually remember it quite well (unlike most other things i must say) :)

I would never run a network solely on Static IP's but i imagine the guy above has his reasons.

I always make a reservation for Desktop/Server Static IP's. BUT i do keep the DHCP Range away from a static range generally you would do something like 10.0.1.*** < Servers 10.0.2.*** - 10.0.4.*** < Desktops 10.0.5.*** Printers or what ever you get the jist :)

Never a good idea having it all in your head, always document it, many times I've again walked into schools and still do and I ask for all documentation only to be told....... its all in my head, my next question is...........what happens if you drop dead tomorrow?..........
