I don't know the old women concerned but I've known other old people who pretty much say random things which can come across as being offensive

And that makes it alright? So if she came out with some racist slur that would have been alright, because after all, it was okay to say that kind of stuff in her day and age.

I felt quite worried that I opened the can of worms even further when after the argument I had with her about my chimenea, I opened a bottle of sparking perry, and the cork flew into her back yard.

Don't be so hypocritical, I bet you've never said more than a grunt to someone you don't know! ;)

I live in London and I know all my neighbours, admittedly only because of the massive amount of water pouring through my ceiling a few weeks ago.

Oh dear! Doesn't sound nice! My toilet systern (if thats how u spell it) cracked about 6 months ago and water pored out everywhere through my ceiling.

No it isn't - she said pedantically - it is cistern (and poured, incidentally). Surprised your old neighbour hasn't commented on your spelling yet!

My, there's some grumpy people up today :)

And sponsors wading in as well

My best neighbour anedote is when next door decided to paint door/window frames/wooden panels beneath eaves (forgot what they are called!) in a nice shade of what could only be described as mustard color.

Fair enough - its his property.

But he decided to paint his half (and just his half) of the drain pipe vent (which is directly down middle of the semi's) in the same color

My wife wanted to go war with him - I just asked if he had any paint left over and painted my half the same awful colour as well.

Saved an awful lot of grief (well from him - not my wife :) )

Well, she lives alone...she is 80 years old, and she obviously knows how to live and how to teach others to live...This is old people. Belive me, if you say yes now, she ll force you to do anything else with your house! But arguing with such people is helpless, besides you have to respect her age. Just say "Oh, thanks for advice, I ll think about it" or "I ll try to do that when/if I have enaught free time"...I had such a problem, my neighbour was trying to teach me how to live, how to clean my flat, how to dress and so on...If you keep silence and just nod it means "yes, I do agree with you, I ll do what you want"...so she ll keep tell you things like that.
