RabbieBurns Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 (edited) WTF is going on. I guess Ive been living under a rock, but why is the USA, and France, and the UK bombing the place? I understand the UK involvment, as they just do whatever the USA say... What is the purpose? There must be Oil involved? otherwise they would be involving themselves in every other country where the dictators are running amok.... (zimbabwe anyone?) Has it ever been proven of the Libyan sanction of Lockerbie? Edited March 21, 2011 by RabbieBurns
penfold_99 Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 They are bombing Libya's command and control assets for air defence. This basically allows our fighters to fly with less risk of getting shot at by SAMs. The UN resolutions was allows for the defence of civilians so if there are any Military assets attacking the rebels we are free to engage and destroy. 1
RabbieBurns Posted March 21, 2011 Author Posted March 21, 2011 what was libya doing? why would we be wanting to fly over? why would they want to use SAMs to shoot them down?

Almost but not quite. It also allows for us to attack rebel assets if they engage the Libyan military at a location that could lead to civilian collateral damage. Its all about defence of civilians. 1
FN-GM Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 (edited) what was libya doing? why would we be wanting to fly over? why would they want to use SAMs to shoot them down? The no fly zone is more for the Libyan military aircraft. So they can't attack the civilians by air. Other countries including the USA & the UK are patrolling the area to enforce the rule. They (UK, USA etc) will want to distroy the SAM's so they are not then attacked in revenge. Edited March 21, 2011 by FN-GM 1
penfold_99 Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Libya Government (Gaddafi) has been trying to put down (ie kill anyone who stands against him) a rebel uprising that is currently trying to over throw him. Gaddafi has been using Jets to bomb the rebels, the UK, France and US are trying to enforce a no fly zone so the battle is more equal and the rebels will have a better chance of winning.
Popular Post localzuk Posted March 21, 2011 Popular Post Posted March 21, 2011 what was libya doing? why would we be wanting to fly over? why would they want to use SAMs to shoot them down? You must've been under a rock. For the last 2 weeks or so, Gaddafi has been using his air force, and ground troops to bomb civilian areas, in order to put down an uprising which is demanding reform and democracy. So, the UN resolution is there to stop him injuring civilians. The bombing aspect is to take out his anti-air capabilities (so, radar sites, command centres, SAM sites etc...), and to prevent his air force being able to be used (so, airfields etc...), and also if the libyan military is operating in an area where civilian injuries are likely, they can and are bombing the military too (so, tanks and the like). Personally, I think this is a very justified mission - protecting civilians from a despot who is trying to wipe out anyone who questions him is precisely what the UN is for. He has lied about ceasefires at least once, and possibly twice now, so military force is necessary to prevent him carrying on. 5
featured_spectre Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Italy has also given the UK, French and US free reign of their airbases for refueling, rearming etc. 1
Robz Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 it must have been a huge rock you've been hiding under! localzuk is spot on - and for once the UK has taken the initiative and the USA has eventually got off its ass to support us and France, so unlike labour our new Government isn't crawling into bed with the Americans 2
RabbieBurns Posted March 21, 2011 Author Posted March 21, 2011 yup, rock. anyway, why are the west caring about this? Theres a lot worse genocide going on in the world... why care so much about this one country?
AyatollahPies Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 yup, rock. anyway, why are the west caring about this? Theres a lot worse genocide going on in the world... why care so much about this one country? You know the answer to that question. 1
featured_spectre Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Its the knock on effect from Egypt rebellion. Tunisia have started as well. It looks to be spreading across the Arab nations! 1
aerospacemango Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 so unlike labour our new Government isn't crawling into bed with the Americans And yet, the mission is STILL the same! Protect the oil interests! Why did no-one bomb Zimbabwe? Why is no-one bombing Bahrain? Yemen? Saudi? Anymore? All of these countries have similar demonstrations going on, and yet, we go hell fo rleather in Libya. Doesn't really make sense, does it? Maybe, we are just making our way, alphabetically, through the muslim world, and Morocco will be next? 1
JJonas Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 @RabbieBurns might be worth you watching this tonight BBC - BBC One Programmes - Panorama, Fighting Gaddafi As the world unites against Colonel Gaddafi, Panorama reveals the real story behind the country's revolution. Using remarkable new footage, it tells how a group of young professionals bravely stood up to 42 years of dictatorship.
localzuk Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 yup, rock. anyway, why are the west caring about this? Theres a lot worse genocide going on in the world... why care so much about this one country? Because the whole Middle East is in turmoil at the moment it seems with Egypt, Bahrain, Yemen, Jordan. Libya is quite close to Europe, and therefore stability there is important for safety in Europe. It also has oil (of course), and overall it is because of the amount of excessive force being used I think. I've not heard of any other country using missiles against their own people for example... 2
Theblacksheep Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 yup, rock. anyway, why are the west caring about this? Theres a lot worse genocide going on in the world... why care so much about this one country? 1) Resources. 2) Not on friends list anymore (see Bahrain for someone still on friends list) 3) Loads of receipts we need to burn.

joe90bass Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 I did hear there was a plan to partition Libya in two. Diesel and Unleaded brilliant, gave me a laugh! Have some rep!
DAZZD88 Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 It's actually highlighted to me (generally ignorant to politics and the such) just what is going on. Thumbs up for this thread.
TechMonkey Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 It may be me being naive but I think also this is because Libya has a history of supporting terrorists, look at the recent threat of shooting down passenger jets if we intervened. The hope in years past was that he was coming around to joining the world community but shooting your own people with RPGs and bombing them isn't conducive when they want a new solution. I imagine there is some measure of if we manage to help the uprising without a full on invasion there is less chance of a nut job group doing taking over or gaining support and hopefully build up a bit of credit with whoever comes in. As for the other countries, probably it is that we are allies with them and they aren't as raving loopy.
JJonas Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Khamis Gaddafi, one of Muammar Gaddafi's sons dies Not seen this reported on BBC or Sky yet
ticker Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 One word Oil. yup, rock. anyway, why are the west caring about this? Theres a lot worse genocide going on in the world... why care so much about this one country?
AyatollahPies Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Khamis Gaddafi, one of Muammar Gaddafi's sons dies Not seen this reported on BBC or Sky yet I wouldn't rely on either of the above to inform you about what is going on in the world.
