Can we get Internet services cheaper?

OK, CLEO have come up with prices for 2011/12 and they are approx 100% increase (Not unexpected - they lost the Harnessing Tech money they were creaming off the top)

 

So, the new prices are £1800 + £8.95/pupil for primaries (10 MBs - well on a good day that is )

 

Secondary £2300 + £8.95/pupil for 100MBs.

 

Works out at £3600 for one form entry primary

 

Is this still an unbeatable price for a filtered internet connection or can I do better for my schools going alone?

BTW on top of that we have a "managed service charge" (which I think pays for our help desk/email and web services)

You wouldn't be able to get a true 10Mbit uncontended line for that from a commercial provider I don't think.

 

However, as was mentioned elsewhere on here recently - RBC connections aren't truely uncontended. The contention exists at the point of connectivity to the internet. So, you may find your connection is only capable of getting 2Mbps during busy periods etc...

 

You could look at a different technology such as ADSL2+, EFM or SDSL, if they're available in your area. They are usually a lot cheaper, and can be purchased uncontended. However, you need to look at the upload speed to ensure it is suitable.

I tell you what it's alot cheaper then it is down south! we pay 12k for our 10mb line from the LEA and primarys pay around 6/7k for a 10mb line aswell

you might wanna give a guy call matt connor from exa networks a bell 0845 145 1234 he is a salesman but the company is very educational focused and the surf protect filtering is awsome

 

i used to put my schools on to there connection because it was about 4 grand cheaper than going with the LEA for better tech support and the 20 schools i put the connections in at had zero complaints where as the other 45 were constantly moaning about it

 

and mention you were refered by Ryan Walker - so he know's im still a backing him lol

Speak to LUNS as they seem to be offering direct services now they don't have the CLEO contract. Robin Williams is the guy I've been speaking to.

Do you know if the prices are the same for Cumbria - I would guess so but just checking.

very true. we've just got our line going in now. dedicated 10mb costing in the region of 11k a year
