Dom_ Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 I just noticed that whenever asked what I do for a living, I say I'm an IT technician, but I then do the action of typing on a keyboard with my hands Anyone else do this? (slow day today btw...)
Edu-IT Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 No, never. It's like saying 'lol' in an actual conversation. You just don't do it.
Popular Post Hightower Posted February 9, 2011 Popular Post Posted February 9, 2011 No, I tell them I work in IT then make the motion of wiping someone's bottom for them 13
aerospacemango Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 I say that I work in IT..... And then attempt to look as geeky as possible, just so that I fit the stereotype!
DAZZD88 Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 I often lie. It makes me sound more interesting. I once had a lass believing I was a horse trainer/farrier in the army, although she was hammered I did pull off the lie so convincingly that I almost had myself fooled. I only tend to tell people I'm an IT technician if I think they need my help and I can potentially impress them by fixing something, earning brownie points in the process....until I find out they already have a boyfriend. Lol.
localzuk Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 I say I work in a school, then if they probe further I'll say I manage the IT. Never do any actions though!

Lol. No girl was ever impressed by fixing their computer! (I'm not bitter)
mjs_mjs Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 (edited) I don't do the actions... but usually i say i work in IT and I'm a youth worker. normally only ever talk about youth work really lol. (and I actually am of the generation where LOL is a word i can use in 'realitily') Edited February 9, 2011 by mjs_mjs typo
Dom_ Posted February 9, 2011 Author Posted February 9, 2011 Just to clarify - I don't mean to do it, it just happens... I'm going to try not to in the future! Tends to be when I talk to older people though.

(and I actually am of the generation where LOL is a word i can use in 'realitily') Real Italy? Nobody is allowed to use lol in reality
JPS Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Well I'm a Data Manager, which I reckon your average person (somebody not in IT/Education) doesnt quite know what I would therefore do, so to make life easier I just say "I do IT in schools". However if I realise they do have a clue, I then go into lengthy detail as to what I do and bore them rigid. Relating to previous posts, I dont think it has ever helped me pull!
penfold Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 While I was at Uni I used to tell people that I studied History. I found that telling people you had just met I was studying computers led to their end of the conversation becoming "I must go..." Amazingly telling people I was studying History it made me more popular with the opposite sex (well they didn't leave straight away), although I was living with a history student who used to laugh that a different subject could be less apealing than history Now I just say work in IT or I'm a technician depending on who i'm speaking to. Most people are just being polite and dont really care that much anyway.
DAZZD88 Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 No girl was ever impressed by fixing their computer! (I'm not bitter) That's not true. The ones that are impressed, normally have boyfriends.

(and I actually am of the generation where LOL is a word i can use in 'realitily') lol is never acceptable in real life! Next you'll be saying 'ROFL' in conversations.
webman Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 I tell people I work in the mirror factory - it's what I've always seen myself doing. 3

LosOjos Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 That's not true. The ones that are impressed, normally have boyfriends. There's a clue there: they're not impressed, they're just happy to have the work done for free and play on the fact you fancy them but wouldn't dare make a move on them as they have boyfriends (I AM bitter lol) As for using 'LOL' in actual conversation, if that really is acceptable amongst any generation now, then it's a sorry state of affairs. Me? I just laugh out loud if the need arises.
sted Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 lol is never acceptable in real life! Next you'll be saying 'ROFL' in conversations. i think it can be used ironicaly or to take the pee out of someone but thats it i dont tell people i work in IT just means they want me to sort their computer problems out for them (usually for free) i just work in schools
contink Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 I have an excuse I learned and still use two different sign languages so I have signs and actions for tons of stuff... In return folks usually indicate understanding of my job by mimicking a yawn
basicchannel Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 No girl was ever impressed by fixing their computer! (I'm not bitter) Sod that! If you want to impress a girl you're better off learning how to cook mate. Although I've kinda shot myself in the foot on that one. Now my girlfriend (whom I first impressed with my cooking skills) just expects me to cook every day.

MkII Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 That's not true. The ones that are impressed, normally have boyfriends. ...usually live in retirement homes
