witch Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Is there a way to remind people to search the posts before posting a new topic? Recently I have noticed a question I posed about network management software exactly dupicated a few weeks later, and today there is a question about screen rotation which I know was asked a while ago. Time and forum space would be saved, and also if the new poster posts on the old topic as their question isnt quite answered, all the info will be in one place for subsequent reseachers.
ChrisH Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 were possible we try and point people at the relevant thread and ask them nicely to use the search function but sometimes you may not put in the right keywords so you get nothing. A FAQ has been suggested but as yet no brave soul has put themselves forward to start co-ordinating this.
pete Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Apart from a big red "Stop! STFF before you post" at the top of the posting box..... There are a couple of forums I've been on (can't remember atm) that check the posts on submit and will suggest existing topics that might be suitable. One works quite well, the other is stupid (think "Clippy"). Properly implemented, it can be done.
alan-d Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 It's not that easy to find exactly what you are after. For example search for duplicate posts and see how many pages you get
projector1 Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 must admit i have a few duplicate posts, must admit i have a few duplicate posts, i do agree with alan-d However what if we had a section for the most frequency asked questions (just a suggest to what is already a invaluable site)
thom Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I often find my searches here ending up with a result from every post in edugeek! Maybe re-organising the different forums could help people find what they a looking for.
Irazmus Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 However what if we had a section for the most frequency asked questions (just a suggest to what is already a invaluable site) We do have an FAQ, it's on the wiki http://www.russdev.com/edugeek/doku.php?id=faqs Although we still need someone to look after it and keep it updated
GrumbleDook Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 That is the main problem ... keeping things like the 'how-to' and FAQ sections of the wiki up to date. EduGeek staff are a busy bunch and we are always appreciative of offers of help to do some of these jobs ... if anyone is volounteering to be FAQ / Wiki updater it would be appreciated. As it is we should thank those regulars that do add whenever they can.
localzuk Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I often find my searches here ending up with a result from every post in edugeek! Maybe re-organising the different forums could help people find what they a looking for. This is the same problem I have. That is why I posted the question about screen rotation. However, now that I search again I find prior posts on the same subject... D'oh!
alan-d Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Maybe a Google search engine for the site will help pinpoint key words more accurately. Possibly a consideration for Edugeek V2
tosca925 Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I think it has been more apparent over the last few weeks becasue of the influx of new members since Bett. In all good forums you get this as more and more peole join but i do thinkit will settle down again. BUt i do agre the F.A.Q and Wiki are essential to keep us all going.
john Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 IF (being a key word) I get time I would update the FAQ / Wiki thingy
ITWombat Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 A FAQ has been suggested I believe I made that call The infromation is availible. The problem is that it is hidden. Links to off-site Wikis need to be more prominent. Unless finding the FAQ is some kind of initiation rite then it's location has to bee more obvious to newbies. Also the wiki is not the perfect soltuion in all cases. The FAQ for each forum should be expansive and relavant to the subject matter covered effect. but as yet no brave soul has put themselves forward to start co-ordinating this. Yeah, there can be a bit of the "too many chiefs and not enough indians" sometimes. However, some changes, such as page design can only be made by admin.
russdev Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 Hi I agree lot of comments the wiki will move across to main edugeek site but at the time it was needs must. Was going to move it across but as we going to version 2.0 it was decided that we wait until we move to this version before we do. On that note should have more concrete stuff on version 2.0 in next few weeks got most if it draft need tidy up and then will go out for people to comment on. Russ
Geoff Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 One feature I do like of vbulletin based forums is there's a 'similar threads' box that pops up on threads. It does a search using the forum search based on the thread title and gives a summary list of related forum topics. Here's a screenie taken from another forum I frequent.
