tosca925 Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 I'm wondering what suppliers you recommend for patch cables? We need some cables around 0.3 m and 0.5m (not sure if any smaller) We are trying to colour code some of our patch panels in our cabs so its easy to identify what goes where so a few good colour options would be nice..........!
mattx Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Make your own - cheaper and alot more fun...... :-)

I spent a good couple of days doing that and it lasted about 3 mins before it got messed up again !
webman Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Thom: Ours used to be the same We don't change that much stuff now though so it still looks neat
acb_ Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 We've used Patchsave and had good service from them.
markman Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Making cables is not fun, the last one I did started at 2m and ended up 6 inches!! We find: http://www.aria.co.uk Cheap and their cables start at 41p inc vat for 0.5m
Lee_K_81 Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Thom: Ours used to be the same We don't change that much stuff now though so it still looks neat Webman, i notice from your gallary you have some Buffalo Terrastations. Been looking at them as they seem a cost effective (read: cheap) NAS solution. They any good? Sorry to wander off topic.
webman Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Hi Lee. Yes they're not bad ... there's a thread on here somewhere about the time we got them. We had one died after a power surge but was replaced rather quickly. There's a community built up around them with custom firmware available, but we've just stuck with the official one and integrated into AD nicely.
markman Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Are there no problems with throuput on the Terrastations? would they be any good as file servers?
webman Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I don't know how they'd react to that, we just use them for backups at the moment. We do plan to use them in a more 'high-traffic' environment soon though.
mattx Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Making cables is not fun, the last one I did started at 2m and ended up 6 inches!! Next time start at 5m and you may get there..... :-) I know its a pain when you stick it on the test meter and its not right, but with some pratice.......
plexer Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Plus by buying them it means they have been tested and certified. A simple end to end wiremap test is not good enough. Ben
projector1 Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Make your own - cheaper and alot more fun...... If only i had the time................!#] we get pupils to make them, and they test them too. Out of about 100 made only one was bad, teamwork is the way forward!
mrforgetful Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I've just ordered a load from http://www.comms-express.com/ 75 x 1m grey plus some 2m and extra green ones for printers and a 20m bright Orange one! If I had the time I'd love to buy a colour for each one of our main IT Rooms and colour code the Patch Cabinet so when I walked in I could see instantly what was for where. But for now that's just limited to servers and printers.
