Good winter or bad winter?

I can't believe my Mrs has just emailed me to say she's put the heating on. Why she can't put a jumper on and do some star jumps is beyond me. Heating? In October? Whatever next?

 

its freezing !!! i dont blame her i have it on in office next to me

The weather is only going to get worse, after all, heat is energy. We are heating up the atmosphere so putting more energy into the weather system. It is all to be expected. Just wait until the gulf stream stops and we run out of oil. We are well and truly screwed!

 

I was going to buy a Discovery last winter (prior to the snow). Before the bad weather hit you could get a 2003 Discovery with 60k on the clock and FSH for about 5-6k. After December the price went up to almost 10k! I got a Lexus RX300 instead for 5k

lol. No, I just like winding her up about the heating. To be honest, I rarely feel the cold and probably wouldn't have it on until it got REALLY cold, which it doesn't do that often. I'm sitting in the office just wishing I had a window that I could open.

 

I went through the whole of the 2008-09 footy season (as a supporter) and don't think I ever had a coat on for the home games, even last year, I think there were only a couple of games when I had to wear one.

Tell me about it, that was what I was uuming and aarghing at doing then when they went up that much I thought stuff it! It would be bad enough the higher fuel and Road Tax bill for it without spending a chunk of savings.

 

Part of me is fairly sure we will have a very harsh winter again, and I should get a 4x4 this time, but the optimist in me says it will be fine.

Well I for one would actually like some bad weather - yes it was a bit cold down here but nothing like the rest of you seemed to get - and not just in the north either. School didnt shut at all last winter whereas the previous year one of my schools closed for a couple of days.

I know we are lucky in the effete south, but all we get is chilly winds and grey, damp days.

I was talking to a friend from Nottingham about the weather and you really would think that we had not been in the same country last winter

Tobe fair it wasnt that deep, but the lack of properly salted roads meant people couldnt get in, i for one couldnt get out of the car park at home as its about a 45% slope

You wanted to see the East Anglian counties last year! We had bucket loads and the school was shut for a couple of days. Let's say our management think admin staff are more invincible and have to still come in regardless of the weather (this should go in behind the red door - but oh well!). I think two years ago, we ended up having a snow ball fight in the court yard against the boarding staff and students. That got messy!

Well, if Sods Law is anything to do with it, we'll have a mild winter...

 

In invested in winter tyres for my car last year @ nearly £100 each so you can bet I won't need them... Of course, they're not fitted yet so expect a major cold snap with snowdrifts in the next couple of days

Well, the cold snap is coming. It looks like Tuesday onwards is going to get a lot colder with snow forcast in some areas. Here comes winter!!!

Since I'm baby-carrier as of January, I've invested not in winter tyres, as my Astra seems to not have issue on the standard fit 185/65/15 rubber, but in a set of AutoSocks..

 

Snow chains seemed overkill, but The AutoSocks seem to get good reviews, are easier to fit and live in the glovebox. I just don't want to be stuck unable to reach Isabel, or unable to get us both home and warm.

I bought a set of AutoSocks a couple of years ago from The Roof Box Company along with a collapsible Ortovox show shovel (and their Billat Snow Brush looks useful n'all).

 

Still haven't used 'em (even last winter was pathetic ) but is it reassuring to have them in the car should things turn really bad - i work on a cul-de-sac where uphill is the only way out

I live on the other side of a valley - so coming or going I have to do a steep hill both up and down.

 

Last winter I decided to wuss out of the steep downhill with cars parked both sides and take a longer, triple carriageway hill route thinking "busses use it, lorries use it, it'll be fine". It was untreated! Cars abandoned all over it. Shocking. Drove nice and gently down there, rear end overtook me and we sailed down in neutral while I sat there and made my peace with the car. Heh.

 

That said, the steep hill had a lorry jackknife on it, so I'd have been stuffed...and in January/whenever we had that last icy snap, there were cars and busses stuck either end of it as it was so icy that it was impassable. I was at home, ill...so I could take an outsider view. People living on the hill were bringing out hot drinks and making their loos available to people who were stranded.

 

If the worst comes to it, I can take a trip to mums and swap my 15's for some nice skinny 155/13s off the MK3..they tend to cut through the snow much better than wider tyres.

Our school has taken delivery of 3 pallets of grit. Oh joy....

 

I prefer the summer, but dont mind driving in all weathers, its the other drivers that are a nightmare.
