I'll help arranging the room with the caretaker [hopefully lol] and do the bits I've said above - internal room links [port to pc etc] and use the cool patch panel i got that has the jacks built-in to it for the cab :)

Cheers for all the assist :)

"I'm asking as me and the caretaker are being asked to do this - he's on ~11k and I'm on ~13.2k."

retain some dignity and tell them to shove it up the proverbial, for that kind of appaling money - unless they want to double your pay quicktime. This is the point i've been making all along - schools are just using people like you and me and paying us a pittance. tell them to shove it, that's what i say.13K?? any teachers out there living on that? thought not...

When I started this job I started doing the cabling which was fun to start with but quickly turned into a pain in the arse.

Trying to drill through 2 foot thick walls is bad enough but having to do 30 bends round walls with trunking just killed me.

I now pay someone to do it all with the full backing from our business manager.

I think it may also be the fact that I drilled through a live wire too which put me off.

Our LEA use an external company to fit our CAT5...but we have been known to do it and feign ignorance. We've had our asbestos surveys done, and to be honest it's as quick and cheap for us to do it.

It creased me up that me and the Network Manager had to go on a course to "Learn to wire/patch/terminate cat5 cable"...we were in hysterics..

In, 5 minutes, out in time for a cuppa. It makes me seethe to think my taxes pay for that stupidity.

But you get a nice diploma for the wall kinda like what the teachers......just more impressive.

You do? We didn't!

Just a "Well done-you can crimp a cable"...whoopdedoo..

I do pretty much all the cabling. I did our last IT suite on my own and have rerun two links halfway accross school on my own. I dont have any qualifications or anything but I had nearly 4 years experience doing cabling in my last job so I have done hundreds of jobs of all sizes.

There are certain jobs I would not do now that I would have done previously which includes the obvious internal/external high ladder work and roof or floor voids. My days of crawling through stuff are over thank you very much :D

It's drilling - asbestos that's the no-no isn't it. Our CC has guidelines and standards which are quite strict. I've done a lot in the past, but it's not worth the risk - you're putting yourself at risk.

Plus as the vast majority of us are overworked we can quite happily pass the buck. Nice to keep your hand in but watch your back.

Asbetos..heh. Yes. We've had the surveys done here-it held up the building of our new suites. The best one I've ever seen was the company mounting the projector in music...hole saw through ceiling tile, quite happy....now muggins here has been in the building 5 years, knows the gen.

Wandered in to look at the job, jumper over my face, sighed, and pointed out the warning on the back of the ceiling tile.."CAUTION:ASBESTOS". Should have seen the room clear! ;)

Had to have the lot decontaminated..heyho.
