witch Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 ........because my calf muscle 'popped' during a high level exercise class tonight. It was feeling a bit tight but not too bad and then..bang, it was gone. I felt very stupid as the class had to stop. I tried to walk out and couldn't so they got two of the men who work there to carry me out... Now I am sitting at home, hurting - thinking of all the work I have to do - I can't remote in and it wouldn't help if I could as the work is not 'get-at-able' Last time this happened, about 6 years ago, I managed to drive after a few days but I expect I shouldn't, should I? Lots of expletives!!!!! Need sympathy And some advice - obviously I am icing it etc but what else can I do?
mattx Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 Honestly, I'm trying not to laugh......honestly.....
bodminman Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 Oooooouuuucccchhhh! You take it easy and I'll have a beer for you!
chrbb Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 It is just the calf muscle isn't it not your achilles tendon? if it's your calf muscle I did exactly the same thing during a very short lived return to the world of badminton! Crutches for three days and limped for several more, no golf for a couple of weeks an needless to say - no more badminton. RICE is the only thing - ooooh and also no more high level exercise classes unless of course there are two men on standby to carry you out!
teejay Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 Rest, ice, don't rush it. It'll fix, just give it time, if you get impatient you risk damaging it more. Find a good book at let others run round after you for a couple of days

GrumbleDook Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 If you are going to use anti-inflammatories, only does so as part of the healing process, not to enable you to hobble about sooner. See a physio too ... to make sure you can work your way back in at a comfortable pace.
kaphc Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 Am feeling your pain, I did something similar earlier this year only I was flying a kite (yes I know!!). Work is not the most important thing - your health is! Get well soon xx
lindylou Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 Oooh ooowww. Your poor thing! {{witch}} < Can't offer any advice other than the RICE thing (not being of the energetic persuasion!). Oh, and keep those two helpful chaps close to hand to carry you around :-)) Take care.
bossman Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 @witch: Hot and cold packs every hour as hot and as cold as you can stand. Physio told me after sports injuries this is what you have to do and it works. Good firm massage after and lots of rest at least 3 days even a week off work with leg elevated and that is doctors orders. Forget work it will be there when you get back, the teaching staff wouldn't hesitate at the slightest sign of a sniffle take a week off. Its an order or else!! I will have to send the boy's down there to sort you out!! hehe!! Get well soon even if it is just to upset @RingOfFlame
mattx Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 This is me when my tennis elbow starts giving me hassle: http://www.liquorsgaloreblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/best-single-malt-scotch.jpg That along with some pain killers and I'm in happy valley land.
EduTech Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 Hope you get better soon witch, take it easy Get well soon even if it is just to upset @RingOfFlame Hear Hear!
witch Posted October 7, 2010 Author Posted October 7, 2010 thanks guys the hot and cold pack idea is a good one, but as I am on my own and cant do much more than hobble it is a bit difficult to sort that one one ATM. I am bored and hungry - and if I am not doing any exercise for a few weeks, I can't afford to eat ANYTHING. NOT FAIR
plexer Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 You have to love karma. ROF: Thats not a nice comment to make when someone has been physically injured is it? now please grow up. Ben
ICT_GUY Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 OUCH. I remember last time I tried to swim through cramp of all things. My body punished me with not being able to walk for 2 days after that. So is the muscle torn or something even worse?
Sirbendy Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 re: driving - which leg? Throttle, or clutch? I've had significant work on both my legs and tendons...I got round #1 by rigging the throttle to the choke lever (pull to speed up), and #2 by driving an automatic. But then, I don't recommend doing it necessarily.
CHR1S Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 You have to love karma. Ironic... Schadenfreude at its best, I do hope people are more sympathetic to you when karma pays you a visit! @Witch Hope you get better soon, muscle pain is the worst!
K.C.Leblanc Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 (edited) #2 by driving an automatic. But then, I don't recommend doing it necessarily. With practice you can change gear without using the clutch. EDIT: Ooops, I'm off topic. Witch, I hope you have a speedy recovery Edited October 7, 2010 by K.C.Leblanc

ICT_GUY Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 I knew of a fellow prison officer who was very very into body building who managed to detach his bicep from the bone.
CHR1S Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 I knew of a fellow prison officer who was very very into body building who managed to detach his bicep from the bone. Ive torn almost the entire muscle from my shoulder blade and spine (or there abouts) 8 months it took to even get anywhere near back to normal, and I still get issues now if I sleep/stretch/move funny and its been easily 10 years
Hightower Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 What's all this about karma? I don't get it? As for recovery Witch, you need ice for the first 24 hours to stop the swelling, and then hit it hard with heat to start the healing process. A few of our footballers literally can't walk after Saturday & Sunday, but this process has them training again come Wednesday.
Hightower Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 Oh, and as Bossman says, a massage can do wonders. Love getting a rub off the gaffa. Gets the blood flowing to the muscles thus decreasing the healing time. Quite often limp into the house on a Sunday just to get a massage off the OH

Gets the blood flowing to the muscles thus decreasing the healing time. Hot and cold compresses do the same, but not as much fun . I injured the tendons in my back whilst in the army. About 20 years of pain later I eventually found an Osteopath and Sports Inury specialist. She said "I'll see you twice, the rest is up to you, 30 seconds hot compress 30 seconds cold/ice, Do that as long as you can, 30 mins or 3 hours" It worked well. Fresh bllod in, old blood out, fresh blood in.......
