I was thinking earlier that it would be a nice feature if the original OP could mark their question as solved - so that, when searching, other users can at a glance see whether it is an open question or not.

What do people think?

I agree it would be a good feature, this exists on other forums and is a nice way to see if the answer is there or not.

Also tend to agree with localzuk that only the OP (or perhaps a mod) should be the person / people who can declare it solved.

Dare I say it - even a solved posts number at the bottom of peoples profiles??!??!?

Actually scrap the last bit - I'd be firmly on zero!!

Whilst this may seem like a good idea it should come with a caveat. Namely this specific set of circumstances on this particular set up or installation was solved by this piece of advice. Convoluted I know but taking a solution on face value is not always the best policy.

Indeed, however the point would still stand would it not, that the original person's question had been solved? Most of the time, to get to that stage requires the circumstances to be explained through the thread, so I don't really see this as an issue.

The point is that the whole thread would still need to be read in order for the solution to be fully understood. When looking to resolve someone else's issue a "Solved" post would help. However, if looking for a solution to your own issue, which may at first appear to be similar, the same "Solved" post may not in fact help.

Still not seeing an issue. Whether or not a thread is marked solved does not affect whether an other user would read it all. I know when I get things from experts-exchange, I don't just read one post, I read the entire thread. Who doesn't do that? And why would marking a post as solved make any difference?
