atamakosi Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 Success! I've finally got the policies implementing correctly! An update for anyone else that might run across the same issues, here is what worked for me. I'm running 2k8 on a virtual server for my dc and deploying Chrome 15 to Windows XP client machines. The only method that produced results with policies is to use the ADMX template in the Computer Configuration > Admin Templates. I initially stuck with setting the policies under User Config due to most other edugeekers seeming to have success that way. I was then able to lock down the policies, get my extensions working beautifully, etc. etc. I'm a very happy man right now. The ADM template had no luck any which way I used it so just gonna throw that out with the trash. Thanks for everyone's posts!
Jollity Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 The policies I'm trying to use are fairly simple so I don't believe it would be an issue of support in XP (make default browser, import data, etc.)Any Windows computer with Chrome should support the Chrome policies. My references to XP having to support the policy were (unnecessarily confusingly) about ADMX files for configuring Windows settings. For example, configuring the settings for Bitlocker obviously ain't gunna do much on XP.

Immediate problem I've found is that it stores a lot of config settings in the local user profile, not the roaming one. Can that be changed? Alternatively, will that stop being a problem once I start using the ADMX files? At present, it is just a local install (from MSI) on my own computer...

I can find the bookmarks file, it exists in my users local appdata, but when she creates a bookmark the next time she logs off and on again it doesn't reappear >_<

I've not been able to see a way of disabling this at all and under my test student account, it pretty much lets me install anything. 2. A lot of the advanced settings are still unlocked. E.g: Manage Search Engines Users Privacy (Content Settings) Web Content (Font Size etc) Languages Does anyone know how to lock down these settings? 3. If I wanted to deploy my own choice extensions (for argument sake, lets say, Stylish, or Angry Birds etc) how can this be done and how can I download the extension files to deploy out to the PCs?

I've not tested it yet but the policy under 'Extensions > Configure extension installation blacklist' says you can set a value of '*' and it will blacklist all extensions. 1

enjay Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 What's the bookmark issue? Strongly considering a move to Chrome here, since a) it is faster, and b) we use Google Apps which increasingly often seems to be a little temperamental in IE.
galvocca Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Basically Chrome doesn't allow the use of Roaming Profile data for things like Bookmarks they want you to use the Sync system. So everyone has to log into a google account to make it work, which is crap for a none personal computer situation. Someone already posted about this last year and as of today it's still the same, so I don't think it's something google are going to "fix" http://www.edugeek.net/forums/enterprise-software/85657-google-chrome-bookmarks.html It's a shame because I was already to deploy it, had all my permissions set and everything but I could never fix the bookmark problem so I looked it up and this is what I found. Disappointed to say the least.

OK it's not an ideal solution but it would work and allows you to get rid of IE as the default browser

Firefox isn't manageable by GPO though - I seem to recall there's a repackaged version that comes with some policy templates, but not FF*.
