How far do you travel to work, how long does it take?

2 1/2 hours each way, contracting last year in Stoke Newington, London. I actually live in West Sussex, distance wasn't too great, but combination of BR, Underground and bus all added up.

Used to be well under 3 miles (I can actually see my old school from my window now (well I could if it wasn't dark)) and took under 5 minutes in the car. Never walked it unbelievably!

 

New school ~5miles through the back streets of SW Birmingham which takes about ~20mins each way. I leave at 07:15 in the morning and between 15:05-15:30 in the afternoon. Adding 5 minutes on in the morning equates to 15 minutes extra waiting in traffic.

 

My OH gets the bus into Bham city centre every day and takes her ~1 hour each way and it's slowly driving her mad!

Just started a new job and it takes me the exact same time to get to work as the new job is down the road from the old job !!

It used to take me an hour and a half on 3 buses though which i did for 3 years solid !! Oh the things we do for IT I love my new job

I suppose wage makes a big difference how willing you are to travel most people say "how far?" when I tell them 35miles, even tho im on one of the lowest pay brackets

 

Use around £8-9 in fuel per day and 50mins each way, but by train would cost around £20 due to bus to station (west midlands travel) then from west midlands to shropshire (via ariva) and take near 2hours each way + a little 15min walk to work from the station.

Isn't that the idea to force people not to use a Car by making petrol more and more expensive?

While my current commute is 20-30mins by car I'm looking at a job with a 2hr commute by train until I can move closer. Still not sure I want that sort of commute!

Then they should make public transport more affordable too. Costs £5 for a day ticket here on the bus. It costs me probably £2 in petrol a day to and from work.

 

Yes there are other financial implications such as insurance, tax, maintenance etc. But still, public transport is so expensive!

 

If theres 2-3+, it's worth getting a taxi!

About a 20 minute drive for me......I did live about 5 mins away but recently moved. So now have a longer drive but live somewhere a little nicer.......it is always worth it!

Luckily, this new government is introducing the universal credit to help people stay in work... so now I'll be sleeping rough on the streets of Chippenham. Yay for me.

Takes me about 25mins in the car, but I really enjoy the drive in.

I work 6 miles from my workplace. I used to take the car, but with the traffic I was burning money in terms of fuel. I now take the bus for £12 a week, and I have no stress of driving and can even have a small kip. Takes me about 40 mins including walking to and from bus stops, as well as the actual wait for the bus.

Other school - 5 mins walk. Takes too long so it's actually 2 mins on the bike - which is more fun.

I used to catch the bus 2 hours one way and 2 hours back home ( total of 4 each day ) and that was bad enough. Currently have moved house and driving a car still

 

16 miles each way which is about 30 mins there and 30 back give or take a while for traffic that piles up on some big round abouts etc

I'm about 9.5 miles from work, which at the times I go is 25-30mins from house door to office door by car, and about £65-70 a month in petrol.

 

However, I'm also about 7 minutes walk from home train station, work is 7 minutes from station at that end with an 8 minute train ride in between - so time-wise much the same. Difference is, with 20% LA staff discount, train only costs £45 a month! So train isn't always more expensive!!

10 miles each way....daily cycle commute. Keeps me fit and means I only spend about £40 every 6 weeks on petrol, as the car is only used at weekends

About 5mins in the car, although when its bin day the traffic (bin wagon's) can make it upto 10 mins. Might use the bike during the holidays though but its all up hill to work and all down hill on the way home. Would prob talk about 10 mins on the bike and takes about 15 to walk.
