That's what I was thinking, I just wanted to hear someone else say it. I would usually leave updating to a new version until at least SP1 came out, but I've heard of quite a few people running Office 2013, and I wanted to see how other people were getting on. Thanks for the input.

Editing PDFs is something I'm asked for all the time. I didn't even realise this was built into Office 2013. I quite like the simplicity of the new Windows visual themes, so I guess it's more of a personal point of view.

Our current Office 2010 deployment is done through SCCM and works brilliantly. I see that you're using Lync. Is this something that you only allow staff to use?

Hello everyone, We have been running Office 2010 for some time now, and it's working great. I was wondering if anyone out there has already made the move over to Office 2013 and if so, what issues are there to look out for? I want to make sure I keep staff running on the latest version, but not at the expense of functionality. Sven.

Yup, this is exactly what I'm doing. It's one of those situations where they get a home connection for £x a month and they think the same applies to business class connections serving 300+ workstations.

Yeah, I'm aware of SLA, contention etc. One of the biggest hurdles I have is price. The SLT want to pay no more than £4k a year for everything (including the actual line itself, filtering etc). I have repeatedly told them that in order to get the level of service they are wanting, they are going to have to throw money at the situation. It falls on deaf ears. All the leased lines I've looked at are way out of our budget (obviously) and it's pointless moving from our current supplier unless we can beat 10meg. I'm in a really tough place, because nobody seems to understand how much it actually costs to run a network. They want an all singing all dancing set of services at minimal cost. It's really frustrating.

Hello, I need some advice on how you guys have your site connected to the internet. Before I go ahead and let you know what my "great idea" is, let me give you some history.... Our current internet connection is provided by Liverpool Direct Limited (an offshoot of the council). We are connected to their network via a Virgin Media 10meg SDSL. Our onsite Forefront TMG server connects to an upstream server at LDL (Liverpool Direct Limited). This provides internet connections for all 330 devices on site. The content filtering is done in the could by Cisco ScanSafe. I am pretty happy with ScanSafe and it performs well. We have an Exchange Server which has been issued a publishing rule from LDL and can therefore be seen externally for use with OWA and Activesync. Other than that, we have no other internally hosted web services (at the moment). The reason I am considering changing providers, is because they are simply unable to offer us any additional bandwidth. LDL supply internet connections to many schools in the Liverpool area, but their core network is only 130meg. This means that the entire 130meg is shared between all of their customers. I have spoken to them in depth about their plans to increase the capacity of their network, but they have said that any changes could be years away. I am under increasing pressure to try and provide my school with the bandwidth they need to use services such as youtube, vimeo and other streaming media is the classroom. Also with the addition of a guest wifi network, our net connection is going to be put under even more strain. So I have decided to post in here to get an idea of how you guys have provisioned your net connections. I was wondering if any of you have experience of using an FTTC connection (BT Infinity Business) and Smoothwall for your content filtering? I personally don't consider FTTC to be a robust solution but with the "bang for buck" it's becoming pretty difficult to ignore. If I could stay with my current supplier but have the bandwidth increased then I would, as the service they offer is great. I'm in a pretty tricky position and as always, SLT want a rock solid fast net connection, but they want it as cheap as possible (sound familiar?). Any suggestions or examples of how you have your setup configured would be really appreciated. Any advice is also welcome. Thanks! Sven.

It's not like I've just sat back and let him do this. I was not aware of this happening, otherwise I would have questioned it. As far as I was told, they were installed 48 ports and 2 x 24 port patch panels with unshielded cat5. I was just at a loss as to why the bothered using FTP cable and then didn't terminate it correctly. Thanks for the input anyway. I'll feed this back to our site manager.

I never got to see the original spec, as this was all completed by the site manager. I'm not bothered if it's shielded or unshielded so long as it works. I have read previously that if shielded cable is not terminated correctly, it can create something like a faraday cage through the cable. With no earth at either end, I assume this can cause interference. I've literally been up to look at the work today, and seen on the back of the patch panels that the earth inside the cat-5 is just loose and not connected to anything. It could be a case of they just used shielded cable and never had any intention of using shielded wall floor ports of patch panels. I don't want to tell the site manager anything unless it's going to be a problem. If it's not going to cause any issues, then I'll just leave it as it is.

Hello, Just had 48 new cat-5e network cables installed in the new library refurb. The people doing the cabling have used cat-5e FTP (foil twisted pair or shielded cabling) but have not terminated the shielding at either end using a non shielded patch panel and non shielded modules by the desks. Has anyone had any experience with interference issues when having a similar setup? If all this cabling needs to be redone, then I'm going to have to raise this with the site manager pretty soon. Any suggestions welcome!

This guy hit the nail on the head. This is the reason I run Exchange 2010 on it's own dedicated server. It does what it wants, when it wants. Runs like a dream.

We use Chrome here. The administrative templates for Chrome still aren't up to scratch as far as I'm concerned. It's a shame, because I would love to set Chrome as my default browser with 100% confidence

This has all been very useful information. As I haven't had to replace much hardware since I've been here, I haven't had any experience with these possible pitfalls. I will let you know how i get on. Many thanks!

Just tested my 3com transceiver in a 1910-48G and it's working perfectly. I'm not entirely sure which switch I'm going to go for yet, but do you think I would be right in thinking that anything half decent (apart from the ProCurve stuff as you already mentioned) should work? I'm really keen to buy some HP switches as I really rate their kit, but I don't want to approach my boss with a bill for 4 new transceivers. I think that would be a little too much for him to take

I have a spare 3com transceiver that I have put into an HP1910-48g. I'm going to switch the fibre over to that and see if it works. That switch is only a few months old so I'm hoping that should be a good test. Thanks for enlightening me about the firmware locking. I'll keep that in mind when looking at other manufacturers for the core

As the title suggests, are any of you running any 3com transceivers in HP switches? I am in the process of speccing up a new core switch for all my fibres to run from and a supplier has told me I have to get HP transceivers instead of the 3com ones I already have. Is he right, or is he trying to make a fast bonus for himself?

I have set every user to use the same profile picture. That picture will stay blank until a user logs in. If no users are logged into Windows, then that picture will stay blank.

Sorry, I just assumed it was for all users. Have you tried creating a new email profile for the user?

Have you tried exporting all the mailboxes, deleting the database then reimporting the mailboxes? I suspect there is an issue with the database that the mailboxes are sitting in.
