The local club has open days every couple of months where (under supervision) you can try out shooting rifles & pistols. It was great fun - we started on the .22's and worked up to .44 rifles It wasn't half as expensive as I thought it might be and was an interesting reminder to the lad (who spends every minute he can shooting things in computer games) that guns in reality are very dangerous and need to be treated with respect.

CAM Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 There is a club down the road from me, need 2 references and a CRB which you should clear easily as a school worker. Was cheap too, though you pay for ammo and targets. I was meaning to try it but lost the application form and had to jump through hoops trying to get another as they won't post it, go down when the club is open with no signs when it is, etc etc. Nearly .... myself when I first went to have a look though as someone dropped an unloaded rifle at reception that clattered to the floor with the barrel pointing at me!

Sadly they would not let little old me near a "Charlie Gee" (which is 84mm). Does repairing T.O.W systems count? They are 152mm. Sadly the nice armourer made me give al his toys back when I left "That" club.

They are 152mm OK, see you and raise with: Pistols: 9mm Browning, 7.65mm Walther PP Rifles, etc: 7.62mm SLR, 5.56mm L85A1, 5.56mm L86A1 (LSW), 5.56mm L98A1 (single shot bolt action version for Air Cadets), 7.62mm GPMG in sustained fire role (on a tripod), Remington self loading shotgun, .50 Barrett sniper rifle (although I didn't get to fire this one) Others that I didn't personally fire / release: 27mm Mauser cannon (including target practice and HE rounds), AIM-9L Sidewinder (live), Skyflash (live), ASRAAM, AMRAAM, ALARM, 3KG Practice bombs, 500LB, 1000LB, 1000lb with Paveway, cluster bombs Think that's it...
Duane_Dibbley Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 WTF guys...i didn't know there were gun ranges in the UK!! I thought pistols were illegal. Any one know of one in/near manchester??? Back in Nam i fired an ak-47, m16, and a colt .45 - the colt was the loudest sound i have ever heard...my ears felt like they were bleeding. Dunno if that was cos they were all leftover from the war - i didn't look in great condition.
teejay Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 Yeah, used to range shoot both pistols and rifles until the gun laws got such a pita that I gave up. Moved over to archery now, still the same idea of putting holes in targets but I actually find it more challenging and there is no messing around with licenses :-)
