As you may know, the Little Gossip website is back online following its closure earlier this year.

If you’re not familiar with the website, it is a message board where users can post anonymous public messages about people and link these messages to a school, college, university or organisation, thus creating a searchable archive of gossip and rumour. Users can then vote on whether they think these rumours to be true.

CEOP previously received a number of emails from schools and parents concerned that the postings on the website were highly offensive and that it encouraged cyberbullying.

The site received significant criticism in the press and was shut down voluntarily by its owners in February. It is now back up and running once again with additional measures in place to try and discourage users under 18. These include explicitly stating that users should be over 18 and the removal of schools from the drop down list of organisations.

Despite the changes made to the website, there is still concern over this site’s potential for anonymous harassment of young people. We would advise schools to block young people from accessing the website where possible.

Any offensive material should be reported to the website via the ‘Report’ link next to the messages. The site’s owners state that any comments reported by email to [email protected] will be removed as quickly as possible.

In previous information received from Little Gossip, they informed CEOP that they would remove any organisation listed on the website if it was reported to them that there were people under 18 years old that attend i.e. any schools with pupils under 18.

It's been more-or-less a complete rewrite to get this one correct and I must acknowledge the help of both my teenagers in getting to the bottom of it this time.

 

Be patient and wade through your settings, it is worthwhile!

@elsiegee40: Seems from some of our girls that when you enable the timeline view, it becomes publicly accessible regardless of other settings. Have you also found this - can you mention it in your excellent guide?

I haven't seen that at all - are you sure they aren't just rediscovering previously public content they'd forgotten about? Also the cover image is always public I think.

Hi @powdarrmonkey, like @AngryTechnician, I haven't seen this either.

 

I will have a further play. You do have to be SO careful when switching to timeline, but they do give you 10 days grace to fiddle with it until its done.

 

I will have another play in the next couple of weeks and see what I get.

It's from last September so it's a little out of date, but I learned something from it... the bit about setting Custom as your default privacy level and making sure that your Networks are not automatically included as Friends!

I thought that some of you might find the new Vodafone Digital Parenting Magazine useful. It contains information about the very latest technology and challenges including Expert View articles, ‘How to’ guides and Take Action checklists which will help families of toddlers to teens to stay up-to-date and feel more confident about getting involved in children's online lives.

 

It's available electronically here and you can also order hard copies for free to give out to parents in school here

The launch of this issue was held yesterday at the House of Lords, with the support of Baroness Thornton. The speakers gave a real insight into why they are working in this area and I was very impressed with Dr Linda Papadopoulos speaking about age related imagery and the mental / emotional development of children.
