These materials look at general internet safety messages, alongside additional material covering the specifics risks this group of children and young people face online - such as contact from birth relatives.

Materials include:

· Presentations

· Factsheets

· Filmed modules - with interviews and advice from leading experts in the field, carers and adoptive parents.

Materials are available now and can be downloaded from the Parents tab in the Resources area of the website.

Recent Ofcom statistics highlighted that four in ten children aged 5-15 have a mobile phone of some kind and three in ten children aged 5-15 have a smartphone. Mobile phone downloads and apps are very popular among young people and are easily available.

There have been many cases in the news over the past year reporting high charges incurred due to in-app purchasing. While a lot of popular apps are free to download, this does not mean they won't charge you later on, and many games are free up to a point, before then asking for a payment in order to continue onto the next level or to access additional features.

There are also a number of services available that allow users to sign up via their mobile phone number to download ringtones, music, video and other content. These are very popular amongst young people, but in signing up for a service, it is possible to inadvertently sign up for a subscription and rather than just paying one charge for access to new content, they could be charged repeatedly.

Childnet has worked with PhonepayPlus, the premium rate regulator to develop two new hot topics for parents about apps and premium rate services including tips for how to avoid extra charges as well as advice for teenagers on apps and premium rate services.

SWGfL Digital Literacy - Home

Free Resources!

South West Grid for Learning have just launched a new website to help educators teach digital literacy and citizenship across all year groups within the Curriculum. The schemes of learning for all year groups, from Foundation Stage to Keystage 5, are are based on Common Sense Media's FREE Digital Literacy and Citizenship Curriculum, which empowers learners to think critically, behave safely, and participate responsibly in our digital world. These 21st-century skills are essential for children and young people to harness the full potential of technology for learning.

Schools can choose to use the curriculum as a complete package for a year group or key stage, or to choose individual lessons for use across the curriculum. From Foundation Stage to the end of Key Stage 3 there are five suggested lessons for each year group. At Key Stage 4 and 5 there are 20 lessons, which have not been assigned to individual year groups, allowing, therefore, a greater flexibility of use.

Thought I would put this here to maybe inspire some people...

I created a recommended video games poster for the children to have a look at. Just as a sort of... quiet e-safety message.

Link: New Tools to Prevent Harassment [Facebook]

Today we are announcing new tools to prevent harassment on Facebook and in Messenger – part of our ongoing efforts to build a safe community.

Based on feedback from people who use Facebook, as well as organizations representing groups who disproportionately experience harassment like women and journalists, we are introducing new features that:

Proactively recognize and help prevent unwanted contact like friend requests and messages when someone you blocked sets up a new account or tries to contact you from another account they control

Provide the option to ignore a Messenger conversation and automatically move it out of your inbox, without having to block the sender...
