Ghosting a Windows 7 PC

Hi

 

With windows 7, can i image it the same way as i can with XP? ie: build an image, sysprep it and capture the image using Ghost.

 

Im really confused if they can be done this way or not. Im currently using Ghost solution suite V8

you need an upto date version of ghost 2.5.1 last i heard

Yes - Win 7 PC's can be cloned with Ghost - I've no idea whether it does the same as XP - but Ghostwalker also runs and seems to finish on Win 7.. We tested with Ghost Solutions Suite 2.5 - running the live update sorted Ghost for Win 7..

 

We have decided to go down the MDT2010 route though.. this is free and seems to work very well..

 

Plan for our summer rollout: Build machines with MDT - Base image Win 7 + MS Office - then deploy applications with WPKG/WPKGExpress.. simple! (in theory)

We've also decided to change from Ghost to MDT2010.

 

Eventually planning to be able to deploy all apps with it, but as we've got nearly a thousand machines to do we'll be capturing custom WIM images and deploying those for each type (student, student + ict software, teacher, admin etc)

 

Being able to use the same image for multiple HAL's is a bloody godsend

You can use windows 7 to creat an image of itself ...... Ive used it to upgrade a hard drive but dont know what would happen if you used the same image on multiple P'cs

Using WAIK/WDS here one image for all machines/laptops, software delivered via group policy, MDT2010 looks good but I was daunted with it at first, MDT is more geared to deployment large scale with many different client configurations than say a school with a few hundred PC's. But saying that MDT would be useful to use as it supplies you with a new skill set.

as said ghost will work but not your version im using wds atm and am reading a mdt2010 book (i refuse to read outside work so not getting far lol) but even straight wds does the job as well as ghost ever did

As far as i know Ghost 2.5 works with win 7 however don't you also have to be running a license server on site so it can check the license every so often ? Didn't have to do this with XP volume licenses ?

We are using Ghost Solutions Suite 2.5... when I push and windows 7 image for the first time since we have been using ghost the windows activation doesn't transfer, therefore now we have to touch over 2,000 computers in our school division this summer... this sucks.. the same goes for the new 2010 Office.

You should be using KMS for that many clients which would solve this problem for both products.

Using Ghost 8 here for windows 7 deployments, no problems so long as the machine is sysprepped properly

yeah you can sysprep it and generalise it and it will allow you to use it on any PC.

If WPKG is as good as the brief bits i've just read then I thank you very much! Been looking at different solutions to be able to deploy software and cut down image sizes lately
