Sophos Improvments

The January release of SAV (which will actually be released around 19th Dec) will include code to significantly improve performance on machine with less than 256 Mb of RAM, so you should see a substantial improvement from then.

I remember when Dr Solomons AVTK did the same thing to PCs with less than 16MB RAM (IIRC) many years ago (goes off to find pipe and slippers...)

This is very good news... i've had a very large number of complaints in one of my schools about computers running slowly... to be fair it is taking about 10 mins to log on since sophos has been installed, which is ridiculous.

 

The Celeron 300MHz/128MB RAM machines just about die a slow death when asked to do anything at the same time as running sophos.

it was because of this problem we finally had to get rid of sophos,

our pcs were too old and slow,

we have switched to nod32, it has a much lower footprint and we find it works a lot better, has a good remote management tool as well,

im not sure where sophos is now , but i do remeber it needed to reinstall the whole program on every update, and on a monday morning with 400 people trying to logon at the same time , the network would grind to a halt.

Wow, our 2ghz P4's with 256MB ram die painfully when the scan starts up (even though it is lunchtime when it is running, people still complain). How in 's name did you get it to work on those machines?

I had never even heard of NOD32 before your posting. What are the costs to education?

Hahahaha! It doesn't work... well, Sophos works, but it takes anything that the machine used to be able to do with it. It takes about 10 mins to log on to those machines on average and even once it has the machine runs like a dog. 80% of the machines are either celeron 300MHZ, 600MHz and 900MHz each with either 128MB RAM or 256MB RAM.

 

Our new ICT Suite arrives around Christmas time (best Christmas present I have ever had), so I can hope to get rid of the celeron 300MHz and 600MHz by encouraging the parents to have them. Ill do this by blagging them off with windows 2000 along with office suite (open office), desktop publisher (scribus) and maybe some other open source free software that sounds like it is expensive when described.

Incidently, I wouldn't have installed it yet if it had been my choice, the LEA forced it upon me by turning up unexpectedly at the front door armed with a CD... they will most likely ban us from using their MAN if I refused to let them.

we have found it very reasonable, well i dont want to say too much esle you will think i work for them,

we have ran side by side tests with sophos and nod32

sophos did a full scan in 2 hours and caught 15 viruses (?)

nod32 did a full scan in just under an hour and caught 35

I admit not under lab conditions and it was an older version of sophos,

Nod32 catches a hell of a lot of adware and spyware

but the best thing about it is the remote admin,

each pc emails us if it has a virus or adware, we can also run reports for publishing on the web intranet

I have been using nod32 for a few months now, previously on Symantec Enterprise. I am pleased with it, although there are just a couple of things that could be changed to make me happier. Price was slightly more than symantec, but I also prefer the exchange module to the huge symantec one.
