We had BECTA come in on Friday and I just received an email from them, and they said "Despite the problems you are having with the netbooks, your ICT facilities are inspiring. Keep up the good work"

I am well chuffed with that! :D

Well done!

I'd frame that and put it on the wall so whenever you get someone ranting at how useless it all is you can look at that and remind yourself that you are doing a good job.

To see how we are coping with our infrastructure on such a poor budget, thing is only the head teacher knew they were coming in, and she didn't let us know so we were caught unawares, and made no provisions etc, so they saw how it runs day to day (which to be fair wasnt the worst thing in the world).

Exactly how an inspection should be (a long-standing view).

I see. Who was this initiated by - Becta or the Head? How/why were you chosen if it was Becta?

I'm not trying to detract from what they said about your place at all; I'm just curious as to why this has come about (and further, to what purpose?) - I imagine there are lots of us on here "coping" (to varying levels) with poor budgets.

I know it's a long standing personal view of many people on this forum, mainly because the inspectors should see what its really like and not some lesson plan worked out to be perfect ten weeks in advanced and everyone/teachers getting everything fixed (and then hunting down anyone like the IT dept if anything breaks like witches).

If your budget is less than £3000 (after internet costs, service contract etc) then yes it is a poor budget (according to BECTA).

The following is "as is my understanding". BECTA initiated it and the head went along, and didnt notify us in the slightest. And I believe that we were chosen as our demographic is a poor area, and it came about to see if BSF in areas like ours is a viable project. However according to BECTA, they surveyed 60 other schools across the country.

And it should do too. It's nice when external bodies/people come in knowing little or nothing at all, and come to that very conclusion you received :)
