Ah... I see a simple solution to this problem. Go outside find a rock and scrape the car and put a couple of dent in for good measure. There you have done what someone else will have done. Now you can go everywhere having peace of mind......

I know exactly what you mean. OH says there'll be enough money put by to replace my Y reg Focus next year, but TBH I'm happy with it. If it gets a knock, I don't care at the moment!

I was exactly the same in January when I picked up my new Peugeot. Count yourself lucky though - I've got the stress of letting my 17 year old daughter learning to drive in it now - although I must say she's a brilliant driver, much better than me.

I remember 20 years ago driving home in the first new car I had ever bought, a 2litre Vauxhall Carlton CDX, it was beautiful, unblemished, pristine; I parked in the driveway, went indoors to open the up & over garage door, jumped back in & drove IT straight into the garage wall.....

 

It took me a good few minutes before I could get out & take a look, the car escaped with a very slight scuff on the bumper (which I polished out some days later)..... but it took me weeks to get over the trauma

 

My family have never let me forget.... whenever I have brought a new car home since I get reminded about the time........

Many years ago, I picked up a fairly new, second hand car at lunchtime. Took the afternoon off to have a picnic and drive in the countryside. Less than one hour later some old ***** ***** ***** farmer drove into the side as I was doing 50/60 along a main-ish road. 60% of the purchase price to repair it.

Hah, yes. I stick to "bangernomics". 1st car was £200, 2nd was £250, 3rd was actually about 1 day away from the crusher before I paid £200 for it and drove it out of the yard with a bootfull of spares. 4th was immaculate, 25k on the dials, 1 old lady owner, selling for £800. I paid £1k, as the funds were going towards paying for a nursing home, and it was worth it.

 

Then 3 weeks later, I hit a diesel spill and slammed into a parked van. Drove it home and repannelled it using the previous car (always keep a spare sat at mums until I've got the useful bits off). Had that car for 4 painless years.

 

Then that was coming up for MOT and looking a bit worse for wear (Rover never could rustproof 'em)..so I paid £1700 for an immaculate 1.6 Astra Auto with 88k on the clocks and a full Vx/Motability history. Belting motor, 5 years and no hassle. Then someone arse-ended it and bent the car chassis.

 

Now I have my £2k X reg Astra auto..again, FSH from Vx/Motability, 54k, all the toys. Nice motor. I've so far kinked the rear arch as I was forced to cut a corner too close and clipped a building (only a ding), and I noticed the other day some twunt at work had swiped past the rear bumper and scuffed it.

 

Still..it's a £2k motor, owes me nothing, makes a great baby-wagon, and is a means to an end.

 

I also own "The Heap"...a £500 barely running, brake system failure, 40mph tops, 12mpg 3 door Astra Auto. Bought for an emergency that lasted a week, now SORN and patiently waiting for me to find the time to sort the engine/brakes out. That's a project for the daughter when she's old enough to hold spanners and help. That has a massive crease in the rear quarter, and it's obviously had a badly repaired punch in the face..the headlamp is cable tied in, and the indicator is..held on with "no more nails".

 

I love my motors..heh...I DO try to look after them, but if the worst happens I can just sigh and go spares hunting.

The first stone chip is always a sad day too. Once you have a few of them you don't care as much. My clock is on 25k miles now so I've accumulated a few chips but I remember the first one the most :-(

I'm probably a bit too laid back about my car. There was no where to park in my road when I last drove it so it's parked in the next street. I haven't actually seen it for over a week.

Hmmm, lets see. 11 years of driving and the most I've ever paid for a car was £1600, that was a Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0 16v CDX, lovely car but very tempermental.

 

Current car, 1995 Vauxhall Cavalier 1.6i - paid £300 for it and had it almost 3 years, straight through MOTs everytime. Put about 50k miles on it in that time. However she's getting as bit ropey now as I have literally done nothing to maintain the car since I've had it, there's now a crack in the windscreen courtesy of a lorry 2 weeks ago and the left hand mirror is missing where I miss-judged my driveway when I first moved into this house. Still MOT'd and Taxed until June - will scrap her then I think and get something else.

Cavaliers I've always liked. Heh. At least with Vauxhall, parts are cheap. Always some in the scrappers, and most parts are swappable between models.

 

Meriva..are growing on me. Corsa B/C, yes. Astra MK1-MK4, yes. Cavs, yes. Calibras, yes. Zafiras are lovely, but a tad big for my needs..heh. I said to Jem, when this MK4 dies it'll be a Zaf or a Meriva to replace it. Or Possibly an Astravan with some added seats, as I rather like the Astravans..

I always loved Cavs too - only new car I ever had - bought in a hurry when I decided not to go back to work when my son was 6 months old and had to give back the company car..I loved that car and had it until it was about 12 when it went as it wasnt big enough for the family.

I got a new (to me, it's a 52 reg) Focus 1.6 Ghia in Mid-Jan as my old Ka was more rust than car, and the MoT guy laughed at it.

 

I've basically only had bangers, so to get a top trim car, which someone had taken very good care of (scarily I've found the car on Google Streetview at the old owners house - this is one of the features of Streetview that scares me - anyway OT!) I became slightly protective of the Focus.

 

Last Friday I was backing out of an industrial estate between a metal fence and a transit. I hit the transit.

 

What was worse was he didn't have a scratch!

My wife is currently in the closing stages of learning, so I'll wait until she has passed before getting it repaired. Now this is nothing about female drivers!! But my wife does like to get very close walls when reversing. Not that I can talk now anyway

My first second hand banger had all sorts of trouble on it's first day. Ran out of fuel at the end of the road from the guy I bought it from then after filling up, the glass in the already dodgy drivers mirror fell off on a dual carriageway. The guy behind was pissing himself with laughter.

 

It was also covered in scrapes from the last owner but now I have my Astra which is OK. It's been reliable but the electronics are playing up like mad (2 Alternators in 3 years too!). Let's just say I am waiting for payday to upgrade my AA membership...

Heh, first car was a banger - '96 fiat punto which was 9 when I got it. Got run into the nearside corner, relpaced the indicator and bentthe panel back sort of... few weeks later my mate reversed his brand new Mini One7 into the other corner and made the dents almost exactly symetrical. He needed a new bumper though.

 

Sold that a year ago, got an A4, protective as hell about it as it was pristene when I got it. Two months into owning it - taxi driver reverses into it and takes out a door.

 

I'm after something economical and < 1 year old now, so I get to be all protective all over again soon!
