no, you can't go into a game shop and buy it for the same reasons you can't go into PC world and buy openoffice - it is free. I'm not pretending Linux is a great gaming platform, it isn't. Its primary role is as a server or workstation - but there are some very good games around for linux and I'm quite happy with them. Ubuntuforums has lists of games that run well or otherwise on linux http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=93

It's not Linux's fault that game developers don't make their games for Linux. It's possible - UT2004 (and many others) work on both.

 

Yeh I know there's quite a few FPS's, iD have always been big fans I know.

 

It might not be their fault, or anyone fault, but how can you all say Linux is so much better if what you want to do is not supported on it? Just offering alternatives doesn't always cut it!

That's fair enough, just people always go on about how it's great and to dump Windows, when you can't if it doesn't have what you want.

 

I don't have anything against Linux, I've used it and I like it, but I always come back to Windows beause it's familiar, simple, compatible.

 

I like the way with Windows I can download a program and install it.

I don't like the way with Linux I have to download binaries to compile first.

personally I'd say TCE is a good deal better than half life 2 - not seen crysis.

Hmmm you obviously have not seen Synaptic then have you? Windows doesnt have Synaptic! It allows you to search and select from 1000s of precompiled online binary packages and it will install and configure it all for you! All you have to do is select the tick box and click install pretty much and you dont have to insert any discs or download anything first! After all thats what you Windows users are used to isnt it? So you should be able to handle that! ROTFL LOL!

No you see I like to install my programs where I want them installed, not where someone else decides I should.

 

Shouldnt really matter as long as the stuff works. If you want programs and the OS seperate all you need to do is partition the disc accordingly instead of whacking everything on one partition!

 

Now, now dont get annoyed over it just because theres not many 'NEXT' buttons for you to click on Linux! Thats why it differs so much from Windows! LOL! :)

You mean download source and compile it? You don't have to do that you know. It's optional. apt-get install is the norm these days. Or Synaptic point-and-click for those who can't cope/don't like a terminal.

 

but how can you all say Linux is so much better if what you want to do is not supported on it?

 

There's lots you can't do on Windows either, how can people say it's so much better?

And yes, I love my next buttons :p if it were up to me there'd be a next button on every set of instructions on anything :) they rule!

It can run a lot more reliably, run without a GUI thus be more effecient on resources, supports and uses open standards unlike MS. And it's open source!

Not everything has to be a wizard, MS went a bit OTT with them in Windows XP.

As the question posed is one which is HUGEEEEEEELY down to personal preference, I will say Vista. I have a very powerful PC at home, but all...and yes I mean ALL, I use it for is games. I have no interest at all in using it for anything serious because I do that all day long. At home, its all about the games.

 

Simply put, my windows runs the games that I want to play when linux either doesnt run the ones I want to play at all or doesnt run them as well. So thats why its windows for me.

 

Really these arguments (much like the commodore v sinclair, amiga v atari ST , and my dad is bigger than your dad arguments) are pointless. Almost if you will an ego thing about who is "better" or who is the better IT person because they are using one or the other and who is more cool because they are "rebelling" against the norm. Something that I am sure all of us nerds grew out of 20 years ago

Windows can do a lot of stuff - but in general to get it to do what you want requires the use of extra (commercial) software or requires extra licensing. I can't read an xls file on a default XP install, I can't turn my Vista machine into a Domain controller, a DNS server or print server for more than 5 machines etc without paying for the extra licenses. With Ubuntu I can do all of these things and it doesn't cost a penny.

 

 

@ jake - if ALL you do is play games, you'll find a console is a lot cheaper than a gaming rig :)

Yes but my favourite genre is mmorpgs, so consoles are no use because there isnt a single even semi decent mmorpg on any console :D

Well Jake.

 

We all know that Amiga was the best. And before that Spectrum was the best. And before that Oric was the best. And Nintendo were better than Sega until the Dreamcast came out, which was always better than the PSX/PS2 but was beaten with the X360.

 

It's all obvious really.

 

And MY dad is....dead actually so I'll pass on that argument :p

 

As for growing up and out of these arguments....NEVER!! It's all a bit of fun y'know :)

The main advantage over linux for me is the cost and no license worries. The disadvantage is difficultly of use (because i'm so used to windows).

 

 

The main disadvantage of windows (for me) is viruses. For some reason, everyone I know left right and center is calling me and asking me to remove viruses off their windows machine. I gave the worst culprit linux and there have been no problems since.

 

At one point (due to the way I was working) I had to connect a default/clean installation of windows XP directly to the net... before I even got a chance to open IE, I was hit with a virus and they started coming in so fast that I ended up having to do a clean re-install again. I think the firewall I had at the time had problems installing, so the only option I had was to connect to the net and try and do updates very quickly. Didn't have much luck.

I've gotta vote Vista - and only because of it's inheritance.

 

Familiarity is the big issue to me. I've played a lot with different Linux distros but still, after all this time, It still gives me a headache trying to acomplish something I know how to do easily in Windows.
