Okay heres an annoying problem. Recently built and installed a new machine, joined it to the domain, installed office under Admin account and user attempted to log on and hoping windows would detect the exchange server and pick up his mailbox but instead it comes up with his username and initials and then defaults to asking if you want to set up a single POP3 account? Why oh why is it not picking up the exchange server? Everyone else can get their mailbox fine and end/recieve emails but this user cant? I have tried deleting profiles, uninstalling and reinstalling office but still it does the same thing on that machine no matter who the user is? Anyone got any ideas?

It definitely sounds like a software issue and doesn't sound like any of the hardware or HDD is at fault. More than likely the manufacturers diagnostic utility will check for hardware faults rather than checksum errors or corrupted sectors on the disc but as you say might be worth a try. Other ways this can be caused are by windows installing the wrong drivers for something but is usually a corrupt driver or system file. Even tho windows may have fixed the disc errors (if any) you could still have some corrupted files on there which may or may not be fixed with further checking utilities. As for it booting via chkdsk route windows must be ordering the way it loads its system files/drivers differently and thus jumps over the problem if booted normally. I have come in contact with similar problems like this in the past. One way I did resolve this was to clone the problematic windows install onto another drive with Ghost and Ghost appeared to fix some errors that were on the source. Once I booted up the new cloned drive I ran chkdsk again and that appeared to fix it. It sounds to me like theres a corrupt driver there somewhere probably caused by hitting the power switch and not shutting the thing down properly. I don't know if this method is guaranteed to work in your instance but might be worth a try. I dont think chkdsk is all that great at fixing disc errors in the first place so the norton Ghost imaging route may work. Also have you tried to do a repair install as that used to fix a lot of windows installs that went tits up as a result of people just powering the machines off and not shutting down properly. Either way, I would seriously back up any important info on the drive first just in case.

ffs!!!! I wasn't asking for your personal opinion on whether disclaimers at the bottom of emails was a good idea or not or bad practice/good etiquette!! All I was asking was how do I add something on the end of the email. Did it not also occur to you that I may have also wanted to add the name and address of the organisation as well to add that personalized touch to the outgoing email. Quite frankly I couldn't give a flying f*ck whether kiddies at blah blah had their email privileges revoked because they putting naughty words in their emails character spaced by underscores!!! Thats not the issue that i'm currently losing tons of sleep over! I guess I will have to bite the bullet and install that exchange SDK and try the event sink method and hope that the exchange server doesnt go tits up in the process! Hmmppppphhhhhhhhh

Hi ppl, Does anyone know offhand know an easyish way to make a disclaimer/organisation footer go out with every outgoing mail from exchange 2003? I have been up best part of the night looking into this and the best I could find was creating an event sink and registering a VB script using the Exchange SDK? Am seriously blurry eyed and dazed and confused! Can anyone offer a simple set of instructions on how to achieve this? TIA

okay managed to get the outgoing and incoming mail working, but when I send out mail it ends up in someones junk folder. Is there a way to stop this so that it ends up treated as legit email and how do I add a footer/disclaimer at the bottom of each email sent from exchange? Cheers.

Hey guys! I'm currently tearing my hair out trying to get exchange server working with an outside pop3 email account. Ive entered the mail account details into the pop3 connector and I can email out to an outside email account using the AD users i've set up but the reply address of the email sent shows up as @.local! I've noticed that I cant email in to the users as the email just bounces undeliverable! I can however only email back and forth internally using the @.local prefix. Can someone tell me what i'm doing wrong and possibly point me in the right direction? Cheers.

Best hard drive manufacturer? Well, it would be Maxtor for me because i've never had a Maxtor drive totally die on me yet. Well, not strictly true there was one drive which played up so an overnight stay in the fridge was necessary then after it thawed out it starting working again. Someone told me to try it and it did! Although lets not forget that HDDs are now getting cheaper because their manufacturing processes are bodged and plauged with 'cheaper' components so it's no wonder they are prone to screwing up more often. I guess it's a case of they don't build them like they used to! As for Raptors, i'm sure they have a better manufacturing process but I wouldnt rule them out from suffering the same fate as drives from other manufacturers eventually. In my experience I have seen fit to relabel some of the worst (in my opinon) hard disc drive lines: Western Digital = Western Dodgy-tall (They walk tall but in a dodgy 'if drive is full up then fail' fashion) IBM/Hitachi DeskStar = IBM DeathStar (The DeathStar plans were not in the main computer! They were on one of these feckers! No wonder the Empire lost to the Rebels!) Seagate = SuckGreat Had one as a boot drive for windows 98 once and it squeeled like a kitten was trapped in the chasis fan before it went 'ping and erected its digital index digit in a way of saying your data all gone bye byes now - Have a nice day!' Sods Law dicates: The bigger capacity the drive = The more prone it will to screw up once it's over 90% full! It doesnt get your data back but its refreshing to hit the fallen HDD once for every 1GB of data lost! (NB This is not recommended on drives >160GB as you may need admitting to casualty because your arm fell off)

If they are crap here in the UK then try and get one abroad! I'm sure if you went over to Afghanistan and purchased one there you would get a sadistic choice of Bin Laden head knocker, 'Jihad' keychain fob or even a 'build it yourself' rocket propelled grenade launcher!

Basically i'm doing ok. I had been working at a public school in Portsmouth as an ICT Technician for the past 7ish months (that's how I know about this forum) but moved on from that owing to a dispute I had with higher management and as it wasnt really the right kind of job for me I got bored with it quite quickly. I basically still live in Pompey with my girlfriend and i'm off on a two week break to Mauritius the start of February. I will be teaming up with some techie friends of mine and forging an my own Internet Development company specialising in database driven sites and e-commerce when I get back.

Wow that sound far easier than just clicking windows update..... NOT!! Yeah true to a point, but at least then you wont wait like ages for it to scan for the updates it needs. Windows update is also relative to the speed of the machine updating itself so be prepared to wait a long time if its not a state of the art machine! As as geoff said us Linux fans know of several shortcuts to automate the execution of those 3 or 4 commands to initiate the update process so thats hardly a chore really is it?

Pete, I could tell you but it's fun making you ex-Refresh guys squirm trying to work it out! lol! I have to say when I worked at Refresh I was greatly entertained by your antics which included flying up and down the stairs at great speeds to meet various customer demands simultaneously and electrocuting yourself on metalic objects with the static! I distinctly remember one day when you got especially stressed and things ended up with a screwdriver being embedded in the wall.

Sorry if that causes offence! Obviously Southampton is renowed for its share of scumbags and thugs but not every one that lives there is not in that category obviously. I'm not that concerned about football either and I can't say that I really give a toss what my home football team does because these days it's not necessarily about skill like in the Georgey Best era, but more about clubs making piles of money, making the footballers celebrities and commercialisation than it is having an all round decent honest game that fans can enjoy.

I saw Jimbo the other week & I couldnt believe that he, yourself, stressed Pete, and virtually all the decent staff had moved on. No wonder Refresh looks like it's going down the pan as a PC supplier! I see sweaty betty still works there tho!
