Eclipse - Library Software

Do you use eclipse in your Library/Learning Resourse Centre?

If so what version is used? SQL server version or Access Version.

 

If so do you have any problems with it?

 

According to our LRC it keeps losing book reviews that the kids have entered amongst other things.

I have used Eclipse (Access version) and it works great. In my current job, they were considering changing to the SQL version from 'Heritage' which is pants but lack of funds meant that we couldn't

We use the access version and there always seems to be strange things like reviews being submitted with no images or images with no review text.

 

Also other quirks relating to users in the wrong place or not being seen lots of little things I can't remember but the librarian always seems to be coming to me asking about stuff of which I haven't a clue as it's quite an esoteric program. Eclipse support always maintain there is nothing wrong with it.

 

Also had some fun recently after I applied a fingerprint scanner update which was only supposed to be for a certain version of the scanner software but I couldn't find what version we were running so I ran it anyway turned out to be wrong but eclipse did send me the cd to update the fingerprint software the second time I rang.

we have the access version, seems pretty good, but searchstar is shit unless it has full access to the c drive and the share.

 

Got it sort of working by using a script to copy the whole eclipse2 dir from the librarian to a full access share folder.

 

This way if they somehow gain access they cant delete the librarians copy.

We use the Access version and haven't had any major issues with it to be honest. A dead finger print reader a while back, but that was sorted. Seems to do the job.

I should add that the only reason for us wanting the SQL version is because of some of the additional modules available. The one particular module our library needed was the 'aquisition' module (something to do buying books) - the cost of this tipped it over the edge.

 

Like I said, I now have to put up with the strange way that Heritage works with tis requiring wiered permissions.

This is one reason I ddn't like Eclipse when reviewing it. It looks nice and sounds great, but its module after module after module, and in the end it costs loads more than everythign else. I looked at Access-it and for the money that would cost, yes on paper it looked more than Eclipse but when you worked it out to ensure you had every eclipse module in that access it gives you out of the box, it would make some significant savings by going for Access-it

We haven't experienced this. In my experience, Searchstar just needs the default file permissions for it's installation folder.

 

Eclipse, on the other hand, needs the user to have full access to the installation folder.

 

Everyone needs full access to the server share, in all cases.

But i must have installed it 2 years back, and have had to do very little maintainance on it....... i would say its very stable overall!

Worked well here. Parent complained about fingerprinting so had to cease using that, then Librarian was made redundant and so now so is Eclipse - £2k wasted here too [and the Librarians time entering our 2000 books!].

I imagine that there would be trouble with the fingerprint stuff, no matter how much you explain it.

 

Our local rag had a letter from the UK independant party saying it was infringing the rights of the kids to have their fingerprints taken for their canteen software.

As a school librarian, I have experience of the Eclipse software... It is in desperate need of optimisation, and there are a lot of bugs. That said though, it does get the job done, if not in a timely fashion.

It's a bit clunky, but works most of the time. MLS support is very good.

 

I've got the Eclipse.net upgrade sitting on the floor at the moment. Hope to use some of their web parts to integrate into Sharepoint in the future.

We were using alice softlink but thankfully the librarian wanted to keep it all local on the library-master machine. The only interaction that it had with the network was backup to a network share.

Kearton - whatever you do, think very carefully before you do that! Softlink's support is poor beyond belief. We had the system installed on August 22nd 2006 and nearly a year later, the initial problems with the system are still not resolved.

We are having a hellish time with there support too. Basically the instructions are always completly wrong and there support does not have a clue.

What problems did you have Ravening as we are in hell trying to resolve issues here? (but we just got it)

We use fingerprinting for the library at our school. It is very successful. I don't really know how it infringes on a child's rights. It's not as if you can use it for anything other than books/food.
