Runs fine on my old Pentium M 1.6 with 512mb of RAM, Aero turned off and no gadgets.

Aero's the biggest memory hog (that I'm aware of!) in Win7, I turn it off as a matter of course regardless of how much RAM I have

Out of interest here to the schools that have already deployed Windows 7. Do you have aero turned on? or do you use the basic theme, or the classic theme.

Just wondering what everyone uses.

Ooops, sorry, laptops wasn't it. I have 4GB in mine because it's so cheap and you can turn it up to 11!

Aero on here. Baseline computers have 2GB of RAM and a "modern" processor. I used to have Windows classic throughout on XP and Vista but I personally feel enforcing the classic theme on Windows 7 is shooting yourself in the foot somewhat from the usability side of things. The computers are more than capable and it is time to move on.

Plus, when you're making such big changes to the network, anything that is considered "ooh, shiny" helps!

Doesn't Aero off load some of the graphics processing on to the GPU were as classic and basic leave it on the CPU. So it can be better on the RAM and GPU if you GPU can handle it? I might have made that up but I think its the case? Anyone going to back me up?

Correct. This is precisely why it should be enabled on any system capable of running Aero. This is especially important on netbooks because they typically have much slower processors. The less those poor Atom, Neo & Nano processors have to do the better.
