techie08 Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Hi Does anyone know what the backup speed would be for backups in backup exec over a gigabit link? Im currently looking into using a dedicated backup server with tape drive to backup a couple of servers. This backup server would be connected to the network via gigabit ethernet and using remote agents on the other 2 servers for the backup. If its really slow, what would be the best solution? Thanks
RTFM Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Looking at what we get, it varies from 150 - 250 mb/min (this is a copy of the data to our backup server). We then put it to tape which goes at between 1500 - 3000 mb/min.

Whilst the network link between the servers maybe fast (1Gb/s), the backup tape drive and the controller will have a maximum bandwidth, the type of data you are backing up (small or big files) or even if they can be compressed etc will affect backup speed. Anti-virus etc, the list is endless. I'm using Backup Exec 12 on a Server 2008 connected to a Dell TL2000 (LTO4) Tape Library via a SAS controller (3Gb/s). The server backs itself up (Server has 15k SAS HDDs) plus is connected to a core switch via 2x 1Gb/s NICS and also backs up 3 other servers. On a full backup I get an average of 1100MB/Min transfer rate. This based on the backup job as a whole. Of course each file/server is not transferring across at this rate. Incremental or differential backups will of course be lower. You could always do D2D, then D2T. Everyone's backup job and requirements are different, what works for one may not be suitable for another. Edited February 5, 2010 by MYK-IT

Basically its for backing up 3 servers in ESXi. all the servers data probably totals about 400gb! Not really sure what the best route would be.

ICT_GUY Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 (edited) Speed is not really an issue if it runs overnight, realistically you should be getting at least 20MB/s (70gigabytes an hour) which is pretty good considering the speed of your average tape drive It will depend on your switches and servers, try some big file transfers. OverWorked Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 I backup to a Buffalo Terastation Pro II. I get approx 450-550 MB/min including verification. The weekly full backup is 322GB in 15 hours.
ICT_GUY Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 I just did a quick test across my network, through two switches onto an external HD via firewire, at about a gigabyte a minute. Cheap switches, slowish external HD gigabit over over cat 5. 60Gigs. I use an external usb HD connected directly to the server which gives a slightly better performance. 300gigs in 5 hours or there abouts.
Disease Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 (edited) I done a test backup to our D2D drive of all our data, it was 812gig and it took 35 hours That was all data including 4 SQL databases with consistency check before and after and 2 exchange servers granular with consistency check and fully verification. Duke Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 1.1TB in 16h36m to disk, 1.3TB to tape in 24h50m. Backup Exec 10d, single gig link to the rest of the network, single gig to the disk backup device (well, 2 links but they're not trunked), SCSI to tape loader. Chris
