Whilst at Bett, I was getting over-enthusiastic whilst showing off the many wonderful Citrix products that I use. Bossman, at this point suggested that I should put my enthusiasm to good use and show others how I've used these products to make my life, and the lives of my users, 'better'. So I began thinking.... perhaps a video for all to see would be good?

 

This, and Microsoft's little push for videos, got me thinking that there might be other members that could also share their enthusiasm.

 

If you have a technology that you would like to show off in a short video, contact me by some means as I'm going to suss out some kind of template to use

I'm not sure this would warrant a video, but I've been doing a lot of work 'exploiting' the potential of SIMS XML reports that I'd be willing to write a tutorial or some pointers on as inspiration for people who maybe haven't looked down that route yet

reason this came to mid is I was one of the many people new to SIMS looking for a way to gain more flexibility over reporting and found XML a great way to get the data I needed in to my own apps, may be a bit too amateurish for what you're planning though

Conversely, I keep coming across far too many people who claim to speak XML, but actually struggle with anything more than absolute basics. I think you could do well with this - a good grounding in how SIMS uses XML reports, the schemas and some examples of things you've found useful and any pitfalls you came across.

This sounds interesting but I'm not sure that I do anything with tech that has not been quite well outlined elswhere online. If you are looking at a more education targeted approach then I guess I could probably find something video worthy in one of my setups.

@JoshJohnson - xml tutorial would be great. What xml editor do you use, i've tried a few but not found anything that made it easy.

 

It gives me an idea for something i would like to do, which isn't as fun as XML but could prove useful.

 

I've got a script that will alter the result sets on an Assessment Manager template, however it needs priming slightly, so a video would be really good to demonstrate that. I've just rewritten with prompts to request the number of rows to alter.

 

I could then add to that the relatively straightforward find and replace technique for editing the Individual Reports templates, altering the result set there too.

 

So all in all a complete package for duplicating some reporting templates across result sets.

@synack - i'm sure you can do something. I think the process of creating VMs would be good, or at least using them as a backup...

 

I use one as a backup for SIMS, so you don't have to roll back a day and lose an entire day's work. That would be another good one to show.

The full solution would imply 2 x Server for Solaris for SRSS 4.1+ and the Sun Rays/SGD, 2 x Server for VMWare ESX/ESXi and hosting all the machines. Providing fault tolerance

 

The simple solution (Or Poor Mans VDI) is one server, a decent raid situation and running the SRSS server as a virtual machine on the ESX server, including the backup methods to provide the fault tolerance. Everything can be accomplished on a single server with some tolerance.

 

You could do it many ways including Solaris Server + VDI Broker + Windows Terminal Server.

 

Suppose the end result would be the ESX Setup, Solaris Setup, SRSS Setup and SGD Setup.

I'd be happy to show off our vSphere solution for our servers with an iSCSI SAN. We've also done a lot with Moodle/Drupal integration with AD and SIMS for our intranet and learning platform.

I've not forgotten about this!

 

It's been a bit mad recently but I will find the time to make a template. If anyone wants to make a start, the plan will be to run them through Expression Encoder and convert to Silverlight with a standard theme. I can definitely recommend Expression Encoder for screen captures!
