ps: The learning network manager forum is MINE!! It gives me an excuse to ask silly questions.....but when am i no longer classed as a Learning network manager?...hmmm....

 

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but the LNM forum was originally for this software, now discontinued by Microsoft: Learning Network Manager The name is misleading though.

I think on this occasion behaviour was getting out of hand and a few heads needed banging together. DB used the teacher banging a ruler analogy and that is what was needed, IMHO ... a teacher getting the attention of an unruly class.

 

Like any unruly class, the majority are probably just sniggering on the side, or feeding in the occasional witticism... it's a small minority actually running amok. However, the teacher shouts at everyone to break the cycle and restore order.

 

As any teacher knows, shouting doesn't always work, but sometimes it's worth a try

 

This is all very true, however, children have to attend school regardless of whether they wish to or not.

School children cannot be compared to a group of members who supply all the content on Edu-Geek.

I truly dont see what the problem is or why ownership and money has been brought into the conversation again?

 

The forum was getting a bit "off topic" shal we say (me being as guilty as the next on that part ) and swiftly brought back.

 

I dont really agree that the whole forum should be a shining example of how proffessional we all are, minding our P's and Q's and patting everyone on the back for a job well done isnt what life is about. Thats what the Red Door forum is for and should be left to do its job (within reason ofc)

 

And to repeat what I said before, until we start paying for the use of the forum, shut up and put up! You wont realise what you have until its gone!!

yes, but for how long can the owner come groundkeeper of a successful enteperise continue to rely on people making the half-time tea and biscuits, before revenues are such that paid salaries are appropriate for catering and grasscutting ? [sorry about the elongated analogy] Or is that really how it works throughout in most other moderate to very successful sites ?

 

I don't know, just that you might be someone who has a better idea than most.

 

I can't give you chapter and verse on DB's business plan ... and I doubt it would be for the public domain anyway, but he has only just got the business running to a position where he can be employed running it. That is a massive step compared to what people thought it might have been all those years ago. Getting staff on board will only happen when it is financially viable, and in the meanwhile I think we are all thankful that there are a group of volunteers who are willing to do the work. There are perks that go along with it such as BETT ... those who help out have been put up in hotels, fed, watered, clothed (even when they already had stuff but forget to bring a freshly ironed shirt down to BETT and I promise to wash it and give it back!) and so on.

 

Long term ... then yeah ... more employees would be an option, but you will still get volunteers doing stuff too ... that is the nature of the community. I know members of the coastguard ... and they have nothing but respect for the volunteers of the RNLI. Special constables ... auxiliary staff in the fire service ... I'm not saying that EG is the fifth emergency service (the fourth is emergency rescue teams, incorporating coastguard / sea rescue / mountain rescue / cave rescue) but you get the idea.

Something like the RNLI is a charity, coastguard is a public body, edugeek is as you say a biusiness. There's a Different aspect to volunteering with a privately owned business, no ?

 

But i do get what your saying, and no i'm not interested in hearing DB's business model, as i've said to you before it's none of my business. But i'm just higlighting words used such as cooperative, community etc. in this thread with the fact this operation is also a business. That's all.

I thought jon made a valuable point. i think maybe that should have been acknowledged by that poster,

if one of the big issues is showing due respect to good posts on the forum.

 

you do make a good point about how things work on a lot of forums. They'll just prevent people from posting if they don't like what they read....no consultation. no fuss.

 

Edugeek admins seem much more flexible than that.

I'm all for a bit of lighthearted banter, but when people are openly criticising and insulting other people on the forums seemingly with little restraint, it's all gone a bit to far in my opinion. Remember folks, sarcasm doesn't travel well when it's written down! Thank you dos_box for recognising this and doing something about it.

 

My heart was sinking a bit reading some of the recent threads that have cropped up on here, I've seen many a forum die a slow and painful death when the people running it don't do anything to control the situation, so dos_box - your post might be very to the point, but in my opinion it's just what's needed.

 

I don't envy your job one bit - I moderate a very small forum, and that's hard enough sometimes with only 125 people to try and please, let alone 20,000!

But I just take a chill pill, have a beer, play on the Wii with my kids and have a bit of fun - that's how I un-wind - some people are just tooooooooooooo serious. Sorry about this, its my opinion and i bet others wont like it. But please understand its my opinion and people can disagree.

 

I have noticed a change in this forum, and its not as good as it used to be....

Its no longer a community site, all they seem to care about now is making money and making the site members grow and grow. The members don't seem to count as much anymore, they are only a number. I liked when the site was a community, i don't see it as that anymore. The members opinions used to count, they don't seem to anymore, its disappointing.

 

Its also annoying when threads are locked or removed when someone is complaining or telling us bout a bad experience. Just because the company concerned has moaned about it.

 

But i agree very pointless threads need to go. But i think fun should be allowed as well.

 

The site needs some consistency in the way admins and mods do things. For example it would be nice when someone locks a thread or deletes posts to e-mail or PM the people concerned with an explanation. Also it would be nice to be able to give negative rep without the come backs.

 

Something i should highlight is that some members have had in the past inappropriate avatar/display pictures, nobody really did anything about them.

 

As someone said before, we need to find a place in between the fun and professionalism to keep members happy. At the end of the day this site would be nothing without the members.

 

But i will stress the site is good if you have a tech problem.
