mrforgetful Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 No we don't. It was blocked by the LEA at one time but soon had that changed. I believe we have a keyword block so Safesearch is always on. In the 3 years I've been here I think only 1 or 2 people have abused it....to our knowledge. At the end of the day, I think if you start blocking such prominent things that are useful then people will just look elsewhere, and elsewhere is always more risky.

Images in the search result are blocked on a per image basis depending on how 'dodgy' the site is. This is determined by greylisting a phrase matching. Using Squid and Dansguardian (alpha).

Expect google to classify the images even better in future - see the "labeling game" they released recently, remind anyone of the "tidying up game"? i'm sure your mothers got you to play that too

Do you really believe that you have only had to occurances of breaches on google images?

I mean its the case with web results so why shouldit be different with Images. To be honest shudnt we be relying on teachers to build better lessons rather than go find me a picture of sweeden, and get naughty swedish princesses or similar. I think teacher rely to heavily on the internet as a teching tool!

The default page the kids get after firing up a browser is a page with 3 google search boxes, all of which send the query with safe=strict. Dodgy stuff gets blocked, using the search boxes ensures they get decent results. Flickr is better for getting _accurate_ image results, but as you expect on a photography site, there's a fair few risque images as well. Have I told the story of the "Puff-Suck switch" here? Apparently, this device is a means of controlling a computer or similar by sucking or blowing on a tube. It's used as an example in a few lessons, so the kids went off to write their homework..... teacher didn't know why the proxy kept blocking the kids searches......

If we try and stop all the tools some kid will just find a differnet one. I just makesure we have a strict AUP inforce like a dictator (1 kid lost his internet access for 6 month). After all Guns don't kill people People do. We need to educate kids as to what is appropriate and what is not and when they come accross inappropriate things what to do. Though I don't advocate a open internet I do think we sometimes throw away great teaching tools due to potential problems... Rant over...

But yes your correct, it's not really a technical problem. Policies needs to be drawn up, agreed upon and enforced.

But well… I am not happy about Dinner ladies supervising Internet access. We are also a small special needs school so we have to keep a lot of children inside. No one is permitted off site at dinner unlike most schools.

Noone's allowed offsite here either, including sixth formers, infact there's a lot about a lot of school I don't agree with! lol
Joedetic Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 We analyzed the proxy logs and found that the most data was being transfered over t'internet at lunch times and the site that it was due to was....yup you guessed it. Google images! So, we decided that it might be a good idea to setup a rule to block it at lunch times. Then we thought, "ooooh the number of kids that use it for legitimate uses in homework etc." We just ended up leaving it and blocking http://*.premiumtv.co.uk/* instead Bye bye all football sites LOL.
