CHR1S Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 Yeh the install worked fine, i just couldn't use the activation key so am limited to the 3 day thingy Serial key should be irrelevant, how will a key know if its followed an upgrade path or clean install unless it looks for a certificate? In which case you just need a valid vista certificate on your system before activating online. I dont want to say anymore in a public forum as we are getting into dodgy ground and im not sure if it does look for a certificate like an OEM install

GOT IT WORKING! To clean install W7 32bit you have to install it twice! 1. install W7 without a serial 2. In W7 from the CD run Setup 3. Install W7 the 2nd time as an upgrade 4. When its installed activate online using the upgrade serial. Just worked for me 4

Hightower Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 Proxy use is already disabled. I think it must be blocked but don't know what site it looks to to try and unblock it. If anyone has the ISO that I can quickly grab I'd much appreciate it.

That and I'll be along in the mac forum to laugh at you when you have to pay another £50-100 for next years service pack

Popular Post Theblacksheep Posted October 22, 2009 Author Popular Post Posted October 22, 2009 (edited) How to make the box and exe files into a bootable ISO... 1) Run 'Win7-P-Retail-en-us-***.exe'... expandedSetup dir will be spat out. 2) Copy 'expandedSetup' directory somewhere (D: for the purposes of this...) 3) Make sure 'etfsboot.com' has copied over from the source boot dir to your copy boot dir (mine didnt copy over) 4) Download 'oscdimg.exe' and dump in C:\windows\system32 5) Open a command prompt and run: 6) oscdimg -bD:\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com -h -u2 -m -lWIN_EN_DVD D:\expandedSetup D:\Windows7.iso (exactly, I know no gaps between "-bD:\") 7) Do stuff with your ISO. According to the stuff here an XP "upgrade" consists of running the DVD, getting the chance to save some settings to an external HD then it runs Win 7 setup. This consists of renaming your xp windows folder to windows.old then doing a fresh install. No programs are taken over etc. This is a reasonable scenario for me as I never really liked "upgrades" but it is a pain to install XP first just for it to be deleted (but then thats what our unattended XP install CDs are for )
Hightower Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 Well I'm gutted! Got home last night, downloaded windows 7 and tried to install it using the clean install option and it failed. So I burnt it to a bootable iso and tried that way, and it gets right to the end and fails again! I know my pc is crap but the upgrade advisor said it would be fine and should install it. Now I gotta try and get my money back from M$

I don't have a second monitor plugged in, but I do use the DVI port instead of the VGA on my machine. Might this work if I unplug it and use the VGA to my monitor to install Windows 7? Just a stab in the dark - any thoughts?
simpsonj Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 Just to warn those who are thinking of doing a Vista -> Windows 7 upgrade that Windows Mail won't be carried over, and so its worth doing a little research and transferring all your important emails to something like Thunderbird or Outlook. Toying with the idea of upgrading my home PC or my Laptop, but I'm not that fussed. Typically, I went for Vista ultimate on my laptop, which can only be upgraded to, you guessed it, Windows 7 ultimate which I can't get under our MSA. Will Vista drivers work under Windows 7? Its the only thing stopping me from a clean install...

Just a stab in the dark - any thoughts? Doesnt seem likely as I've got a dual monitor setup that I left plugged in and it worked OK. Whereabouts during the install is it failing and are you getting any errors? If it's failing right at the end I'd guess it's trying to install a hardware driver for some kind of device you have connected which is causing windows to crash. Guess the first thing I would try would be to unplug every usb device connected to your PC and any unused peripherals so you only have literally just the keyboard plugged in. Maybe also remove any PCI expansion cards, Blu-ray/Zip drives that you don't require so you only have the bare minumum connected to get windows installed? If that still fails then maybe check your motherboard(or PC manufacturers) website for BIOS updates and then google search to see if there's anyone else with the same hardware having similar issues? Don't panic. Im sure you'll get it working with one of the above! Edited October 23, 2009 by flyinghaggis
