alan-d Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 Just received this via our LEA - thought it may be useful for others too. POLICY CENTRAL ENTERPRISE As you may be aware we are experiencing issues with Microsoft Internet Explorer browser performance whilst PCE Client is installed. During the last 4-5 weeks IE has undergone some protocol changes via Microsoft update which has altered the behaviour of the browser at Winsock level where the Policy Central filtering engine operates. The issues have proved to be exceptionally difficult to resolve. However, Forensic Software engineers are now finalising the solution and v.3009 will be made available as an automatic update to all sites in 2 weeks time. If you are unable to tolerate the IE browser issues until that time, then please undertake one of the following temporary measures for affected users only: * Use another browser like Firefox, there are no issues with this browser. Download here - http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox * Disable Policy Central client via the PCE Console. Login to PCE Console:- ->Go to the “Users” tab within PCE console:- -> locate user -> edit user (right hand side of screen) -> click on the “Disable Rights?” box -> insert period of time PCE is to be disabled -> save and update. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and frustration this issue has undoubtedly caused.
alan-d Posted October 14, 2009 Author Posted October 14, 2009 Alan, Who sent you this? As i never got it It was published in e-breifing.
Michael Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 I read it too. I'm kind of glad in a way that it's been clarified there is a problem, but this has been ongoing for months, not weeks. The IE update in question was released in June/July if memory serves me right. In the meantime I have deployed FF to all my schools which has dramatically improved the situation with browsing, accessing e-portal and other web based applications.
stevenlong1985 Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 Hi Yeh I fixed my problems with Fire Fox a few weeks back. But I have another issue I cant help think its PCE, Yesterday 30 kids log on in one room normally everything is fine, windows start to log on, but then takes forever load the log on batch script nearly 30 laptops couldn't get passed the loading screen, normally 30 seconds to go on complete takes over 15mins and doesn't load properly, I walked passed another class room down the Hall and they were all logged in with no problems. I've checked the network, Ive made no changes. Sometimes I get the error message on the laptop saying PCE not working error. Anyone had this issue?
AndyNDuffy Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 I recieved this email from them directly a couple of weeks ago. I still havent heard back from them regarding an update?? I have removed it from our site because it slowed everyones browsing down to a crawl. Have many people had this problem? would be interested to hear if Securus users have had similar problems. Cheers Andy
Little-Miss Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 hmm, well we've just decided on another thread that PCE is whats causing all my problems at the mo.....stupid software...
AndyNDuffy Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 I really do love the software but I suspect it could have been responsible for a few niggles for ages.
kmount Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 Not heard of any update as yet, we're touch wood not too affected as yet. (IE becomes useless after 5 mins of use so close/reopen window).
bmdixon Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 Just spoken to forensic support and the update should be released in the next few days. It was supposed to be released today but is now looking like tues/wed this week....
jamin100 Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 Yeh got the same answer here too. I'll be rolling out firefox in my next image builds.. Cant keep having these issues with PCE and IE
techie08 Posted November 5, 2009 Posted November 5, 2009 The update was originally supposed to be a month ago then it keeps changing and changing and changing!! I really do love the software and they said they are releasing a mac client soon but im in two minds on if im going to get my money back.
Little-Miss Posted November 5, 2009 Posted November 5, 2009 Grr!! How do you remove the client. I accidently installed it on the server and i thought id uninstalled it but ive realised there's a process still running. Reboot?
Michael Posted November 5, 2009 Posted November 5, 2009 I had a chat with someone at Link2ICT before half term who assured me PCE 3.0.0.9 would be released and tested during half-term, but unfortunately they're still waiting for the update. It isn't Link2ICT's fault for the delay, however, it was still Link2ICT who have recommended this software. If you search these forums I'm pretty sure I remember writing months ago I'd never recommend or use this software if I was heading the project. It's fine how it works in principle, but it's blatantly causing too much disruption to children's learning and I have a big problem with that.

I accidently installed it on the server and i thought id uninstalled it but ive realised there's a process still running. Reboot? Yes a reboot is required once you've uninstalled the software. I wouldn't recommend you deploy the client on your server, only host the share on the server.
Little-Miss Posted November 5, 2009 Posted November 5, 2009 lol! I didnt plan too, got a bit trigger happy!!
swordfish215 Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 Is there any news on this update, its causing me so many IE errors at the moment
Michael Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 Is there any news on this update, its causing me so many IE errors at the moment Seriously the best advice is to use Firefox wherever you can. I came to the conclusion this problem would be forever on-going, as Microsoft release security patches, Forensic play 'catch up'. Since deploying Firefox internet connectivity has become far less of an issue.

Not being funny, but its hardly a soloution to the problem, we have over 600 clients running PCE, with IE locked down with various group policy settings, surely installing Firefox will create more security issues, its just moving the problem around
Michael Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 Not being funny, but its hardly a soloution to the problem, we have over 600 clients running PCE Being totally honest I had exactly the same thoughts/opinion as you initially, but the Microsoft patch in question was released in June 2009 and we're now in November 2009 and still waiting for a PCE patch. I spent many hours researching FF and the link I gave you was/is a locked down version of FF. I've also provided instructions so you can specify your own custom settings from what I have created. In total I probably support about the same number of machines, maybe a little more, over various sites and it has worked very well.
AndyNDuffy Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 Hi Little Miss I did the same a while ago and the client just wouldnt uninstall. They can send you a utility which will remove it if need be.
jamin100 Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 I take it nobody has heard anything about the update yet? I just phoned link2ICT and they just forwarded me to forensic (who didn't answer the phone)
techie08 Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 They got me to test a patch at the begining of last week and so far so good. All it does is replace a PCE .dll Im testing it on around 10 computers and see what happens. I asked them that what happens if internet explorer does updates again and we could have the same situation again? And they said quite possibly. Doesnt really fill me with confidence!!!!!
