We are subscribed in by the LEA as part of our core subscription at a reduced rate, as a primary we couldn't afford the software otherwise and it ticks a lot of boxes for child protection, filtering etc etc. The big issue is they release these updates to fix issues but create more in the process!

With filtering by the EMBC why is PCE needed?

Because filtering provides no keyword monitoring so if a chat session is monitored with PCE you will have peace of mind that if it happens to be with someone grooming then the whole thing will be reported and appropriate action can be taken. I would rather be over protected in this situation.
sidewinder Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Anyone having problems with the 3.1.0.3 client? We've been alright for a while but in the last few days have got lots of reports of IE crashing. Have removed PCE client from one room to see if it makes any difference but lets be honest, PCE is usually the culprit
alan-d Posted June 10, 2010 Author Posted June 10, 2010 Not installed it yet. Still running with 3.0.0.9. Some exams, mainly internal ones, are using IT so not taking the risk of adding another possible problem.

sidewinder Posted June 15, 2010 Posted June 15, 2010 Anyone? Or just some general advice? I've removed the client from a few teachers PC's but they still reckon IE is crashing. But I just cant see what else could be causing it EXCEPT PCE? Whats the issue with Sophos? There are quite a lot of 'suspicuous behaviour' alerts, does this in itself cause a problem even if the client alone isnt? Getting mountains of complaints now, its getting bad here
sister_annex Posted June 15, 2010 Posted June 15, 2010 You need to ensure that all the sophos application files (exes) are added to the application exception list in PCE console. you will also need to make sure that the policy central application files are added to the sophos exception list. we do have issues with IE Crashing but we put it down do it just being IE we have had issues with and without (mainly at the minute extremely slow responses from the server) try running IE without any addons both sophos and PCE have addons in PCE - disable them all then re-add one by one your culprit may be there. If there is anything else i can think of i will let you know. otherwise get in touch with Paul or Simon at forensic they are pretty good with handling any problems that arise HTH

I've emailed the most vocal teachers to ask them to let me know if theres any difference, I fully expect to hear nothing back and then in 2 weeks time for them to go 'internet is still crashing, havent you done anything?' With the PCE IE add-on, I assume that is there for the web filtering rather than the caoturing. So if you dont make use of the filtering (like us) you dont actually need it?

PCE has still not updated the server but before I log a call can a Birmingham School confirm that the download URL in the Registry should still read; ......../bham/3102/ Or has it changed to 3103 or something else? Apparently fixes the following This resolves known Internet Explorer issues and issues outlined below:- 1. Shockwave (patch to resolve PCE Client incompatibility with the Shockwave add-on in (IE) 2. PCE Remote Deployment Tool (patch to resolve ASP .NET trust permissions issue when running the tool from a shared location) 3. Optimised text out buffer (to enhance Windows Explorer performance) 4. Installshield engine (patch to resolve dll registration error when installing PCE Client via setup.exe) 5. PCE Remote Deployment Tool (patch to resolve the Failed To Login As User issue) 6. IIS Application Pool (patch to resolve the Server Busy issue). 7. PCE Client Re-Direction On URL Block (patch to help force the redirection when a URL is blocked, thereby increasing IE performance)
sidewinder Posted June 21, 2010 Posted June 21, 2010 Ive updated straight away, since it cant be any worse than 3.1.0.3. Hopefully the problems were with Shockwave and all will now be resolved. I shall hold my breath though
