Remote support software

I have a friend overseas who's PC needs looking at but I can't connect to them as they can't get a direct internet connection for me to use anything like VNC. I know that you can use products where the user browses to a website and installes an agent which then lets you connect as they initiated the connection. Smoothwall use one when they do remote support but I can't remember what it's called.

 

Does anyone know of a free product a bit like that?

This gives them an icon to click that gives gives a VNC connection to your machine outbound so that it traverses firewalls.

Teamviewer is free for non-commercial use. Works just as well as logmein

Teamviewer is the tool and that is what Smoothwall use as well (they pay for it and have a posh customised version as well )

For my mates all I do is use windows messenger, it has remote support stuff built in.

He just sends you the request on msn and it will try to connect (can take up to 2 mins) but it mostly works.

Was just looking in to this as RDP is currently not an option at all my schools- and this thread rises from its grave.

 

Now that it's shuffling around: is Teamviewer definitely free for EDU use? Has anyone used Chrome Remote Desktop and can compare?

Well, I tried to use it but without changing a load of the school's settings or creating a private account (to enable access to the web store) can't get past installing Chrome on my laptop.

 

May need to rethink! (Or accept that Google will eventually get their claws into my soul).
