mattstevenson2005 Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Hi Everyone We are replacing and upgrading all of our servers and we are recreating our entire domain so that means we can have new server names. At the moment we have boring names based on their role. Does anybody have any ideas, was thinking LCARS, Enterprise, Voyager etc.. big Star Trek fan we have 14+ servers so we need quite a few names and also got to bear in mind that we are a school and pupils see the names so they cant be rude Dam!! lol Any ideas would be great!! We use knights of the round table here, with the domain called "camelot" and "arthur" as our DC. I know Bath Uni (job interview) use bird species for there servers but I didn't think that was to creative... Edited June 22, 2009 by mossj
maniac Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Sounds boring, but with that many servers, believe me it's much easier to use a proper naming convention, or sometimes it can get confusing. You get used to them, true, but it can be a nightmare if anyone new starts, or if anyone works on your system. Mine are going to be based on the template SA-DC01 (SA being the initials of the academy, DC01-Domain Controller 01) If you want to use names, one I would love to see would be names of pokemon characters, purely cos they're so silly! EduTech Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 We name ours like the following SCHOOL-DC-01 --- SCHOOL-EXCHANGE --- SCHOOL-SQL works quite well, and it helps remember all the servers Before i started, the servers were name after the south park characters.. which i found quite ammusing, i actually found a network cable that had a label on which said "cartman" the other day. so i'm guessing that was that servers network cable lol Oh the Joy! This may cause problems, i dunno just a late night thought without actually thinking.. Call the actual machine something proper, and then create a second DNS Entry called something funny and point it to the same IP (CNAME) then you get the best of both worlds. lol James.

One school I worked in they were just called DC01, EXCHANGE, STORAGE etc. which meant they were all over the place in the list. Mike.

pete Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 I have three themes, depending on what the box does it gets a name from the correct theme. Giving obvious "box does this" names in a network where most of the users fall into the untrusted category is sub-optimal imo. If an end-user needs to access a server by name, it gets cnamed to the appropriate function.
cookie_monster Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 The only problem with using incremental numbering e.g. DC01, DC02 is that MS recommends that any new DC doesn't have the same name as a previous one so you end up removing DC01 and replacing it with DC03. Eventually the numbers become as confusing as names especially if you have over 10 servers (that only applies to DC's though). Also 'friendly' names are much easier for staff/students to remember if you're describing a location, this is the same reason that we give printers names as well.

We then further debated the issue and named all our servers after the Teletubbies When they ran out we know put names into a hat and pick one out!
cookie_monster Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Going to be in the process of changing them soon but the print server was Springfield and the printers all had the names of the Simpsons characters. Students would then just walk in and say Homer is out of toner instead of the usual eerrrr I’m not sure which one but it's out of toner. We wanted to do the same for the Citrix boxes as well so users could easily remember the server name but we've gone with numbers now to make scripting easier.
tech_guy Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 The last place I worked at, I named all the servers and workstations after cities in India (Agra, Varanasi, Jodphur, Jaipur, etc). Here, we have to use boring names that show the make/role/location of the machine :(

DAckroyd Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 I'm attempting to go through the process of building a new domain from scratch and I've gone for DC1, DC2, DC3, DC4, DataStore then other servers are academyPrintServe, academyDHCP, Etc. AV servers is just Eset-AV our Physical servers are called ESX1, ESX2, and DC1 Strange selection of names but as we currently have 14 different servers as all roles and services are split where possible - the good thing about VM's

Hmmm... that reminds me of the old Pen Island Company joke.... they registered their domain name: penisland.com We are in the process of creating a completely new infrastructure and previously had DC01, DC02, MAILSERV01, SQL01 etc... This time we decided to go for Greek Mythological names... now not only can people not remember the name but if they do happen to remember they can't say it or spell it... perfect...

Can't remember them now but they look so innocent when they are CamelCased but must have slipped through the net when they were decided on!!
